day 2.272

the emmys!
last night, jimmy fallon hosted the 63rd annual emmy awards. the emmys are my third favorite award show (oscars, golden globes, emmys), but jimmy's hosting gave the globes a run for their money. helping bring almost 200,000 more viewers to this years telecast, jimmy brought an enthusiasm to the show that's hard to come by. his years of improv training and quick wit helped keep the show's pace up and kept it on time, a rarity in the award show circuit. the show opened with a glee-themed skit and song/dance number check out the skit and performance below. it features glee stars alongside jimmy, tina fey, kate gosselin, john hamm, betty white and more.
ok, and for the winners:
  • supporting actor, comedy: eric stonestreet, modern family
  • supporting actress, comedy: jane lynch, glee
  • outstanding actor, comedy: jim parsons, the big bang theory
  • outstanding actress, comedy: edie falco, nurse jackie
  • outstanding reality competition program: top chef
  • supporting actor, drama: aaron paul, breaking bad
  • supporting actress, drama: archie panjabi, the good wife
  • outstanding actor, drama: bryan cranston, breaking bad
  • outstanding actress, drama: kyra sedgwick, the closer
  • outstanding drama series: mad men
  • outstanding comedy series: modern family
i really couldn't be happier with the choices. from all the shows i do watch, the people i wanted to (though i highly doubted would!) won. and for the shows i don't watch, the deserving people won...from what i've read. it was a night of surprises, as stonestreet, parsons, falco and sedgwick, amongst others, were all favored to lose against more "commercial" stars. it seems as if entertainment politics were pushed away in favor of the deserving winners. for the full list of winners and to watch clips from the show, click here.

dancing with the stars: the next generation
the new cast of dwts was just announced live on abc. as per usual, it's more "they used to be stars" than "they currently are a star." anyway, here's the line-up:

  • jennifer grey, actress (dirty dancing)
  • margaret cho, actress/comedian
  • audrina patridge, reality tv star (the hills)
  • florence henderson, actress (the brady bunch)
  • bristol palin, sarah palin's daughter (yes, that's her only title)
  • michael bolton, singer
  • mike "the situation" sorentino, reality tv star (the situation)
  • david hasselhoff, actor (baywatch)
  • kurt warner, nfl quarterback
  • kyle massey, actor (that's so raven)
  • rick fox, retired nba player/actor
the new season of dancing with the stars kicks off monday, september 20th on abc.

day 2.268

justin bieber, thespian.
in its now-standard stunt casting, csi brought in justin bieber for at least one episode this season. yes, there's apparently the opportunity to bring the biebs back for more episodes should the show decide to. he's playing a "troubled teen" apparently. i'm guessing they're reusing the script from the taylor swift episode? except not killing little j. check out the show's fall preview above, featuring a blink-and-you'll-miss-it bieber clip. jump the shark much, csi?

she's a free bitch, baby.
she just has to stay in l.a., take random drug tests, attend 5 aa meetings a week, see a shrink a lot. and not do drugs. easy peasy.

day 2.266

katy perry is a "teenage dream"
so that (^) happened today. and by happened i mean katy perry's new album, "teenage dream," dropped. i've been waiting for this cd since "california girls" first leaked online. the disc is a good mix of fast paced pop and slowed down ballads. it's dirty. it's tongue-in-cheek. it's explicit. it's funny. it's happy. it's sad. it's everything you wanted and more. ok, maybe that's an exaggeration, but...still. check out some of the highlights below.

August 23, 2010

day 2.265

don't skip the switch
it's the first day of school and i have no homework. so what did i do? i went and saw the switch. the film stars jason bateman and jennifer aniston as best friends, one over-the-top neurotic (bateman) and one whose biological clock is ticking away (aniston). when jen's character, cassie, doesn't ask bateman's wally for his "sample" when she wants to get knocked up, he takes things into his own hands and replaces her donor's "seed" with his own. however, he doesn't remember doing it because he was, well, drunk. cassie moves back home to minnesota, has a son (sebastian) and loses touch will wally. cut to seven years later and cassie is ready to move back to new york city with sebastian. wally and cassie reconnect and....well, i don't want to spoil anything else for you. while jennifer aniston is basically playing the same character she's been playing for almost 20 years, the film is really about bateman's character bonding with sebastian, played adorably by thomas robinson. he's like an adult in a kid's body. this movie hasn't done very well commercially and probably won't be in your theater for all that long, so i suggest you run out and see it. i think there was too much emphasis put on jennifer aniston in the advertising and that's what killed it. but, in reality, she's more of a supporting character than the star.

August 22, 2010

again, back tomorrow.

August 21, 2010

day 2.263

get waxed
i'm officially a robert rave fan. i read his first novel, spin, at the beginning of summer. and, to finish my summer out, i read his new one, waxed. waxed follows the trials and tribulations of three sisters as they run their own waxing salon, impresarios. carolina, sofia and anna (the three sisters) are all at different points in their lives - carolina is having all of the success in the world as the owner and operator of impresarios, but her life is void of romance; sofia finally struck a balance in her life, happy professionally and personally with her doting husband; and anna is bouncing back from a divorce, getting back into the routine of working and providing for her family. but things have to change, right? cheating boyfriends, cheating on boyfriends, emotional cheating, a transgendered five year old and an eccentric billionairess on her deathbed all get throne into the mix and turn the sisters' live upside down. while the book is a little slow to get into, it picks up. i think the slowness is the result of rave's attempt to write the opening chapters so vividly that they could be translated easily onto a movie screen. he gets over that habit once the book's action picks up, so much so that you almost wish it were longer.

why celebs shouldn't write books
over the past couple of years, comedians have been reading excerpts from celebrity memoirs in the off-broadway show "celebrity autobiography." i hadn't seen a performance from it until the above clip hit youtube. watch as sherri shepherd, marion cantone and jackie hoffman read from soul survivors: the official destiny's child autobiography. it is one of the funniest things i have watched ever. the sad part is, i read this book when it first came out. click here to watch more clips from celebrity autobiography."

day 2.259

take a bieber fever trip
justin bieber's "u smile" has been slowed down 800 times to become this 35 minute musical....er, journey? it's one of the most bizarre things to listen to.

August 16, 2010

day 2.258

prostitution whore no more
well at least that's the word on the street. life & style magazine reports danielle staub, the center of the new jersey drama universe, will not be asked back should bravo greenlight a third season of the real housewives of new jersey. after two seasons of terrorizing the manzo/laurita family, danielle has reportedly been told the "explosive" reunion she filmed for the show's current season will be her last appearance with the current cast. this gives bravo the chance to bring back my favorite new jersey housewife, dina, who left the show because of its focus on danielle, and get back to a more fun, lighter show - like all the others. while danielle's antics have been ratings gets for the network, two seasons is probably as long as they could string her "storyline" out for. the mag reports staub has been telling people she's getting her own spin-off, but others say she's just putting the rumor out there in hopes it will come true. what would her spin-off document? she seems to have no life. another rumor floating around is danielle will cross state lines and pop up on the real housewives of new york. the new jersey villianess has supposedly been looking for an apartment in the city to move into after she sells the house she currently lives in (and reportedly lost in her divorce).

and lisbeth salander is...
rooney mara? the virtually unknown actress has been cast in the first flick in u.s. adaptation of the "millenium trilogy," the girl with the dragon tattoo. after filming the social network - that movie about the rise of facebook - with director david fincher, who is also directing the girl with the dragon tattoo, reportedly campaigned hard for the starlet. she joins daniel craig (as mikael blomkvist), robin wright (as erika berger) and stellan skarsgard (as martin vanger) in the series. i think it's good to cast an unknown and i have no clue if this is the right choice, but i hope it is. it would be quite the travesty should hollywood eff up this series. daniel craig is a little too pretty in my opinion to play the haggard journalist, but hopefully he can pull it off. the film is set to start production this fall.

August 14, 2010

day 2.256

eat, pray, love. skip.
unless you read the book, i don't see you liking julia robert's return to movie stardom. eat, pray, love is a good adaptation of a so-so book by elizabeth gilbert that follows her journey to regain balance in her life after a divorce. elizabeth traveled to italy, india and indonesia to regain the joy of eating, praying and loving in each of the respective countries. because the book is so much of a personal love letter to the reader, i didn't see how it would translate onto the screen. elizabeth is alone and analyzing her experiences within the confines of her own mind; how can that be fun to watch? well, it isn't. though julia and her toothy charm bring some life to the story, it's hard to sympathize with self indulgence and one's personal journey. glee creator ryan murphy directed the pic but didn't seem to find the right balance between serious and light. the movie isn't enough fantasy or enough reality for the viewer to get sucked in. murphy isn't really in touch with being a motion picture director either, with many of his shots looking amateur or experimental. at over two hours long, you're ready to be done with elizabeth's journey long before she it. having read the book and seen the movie, i could do without one-third of each: india. elizabeth is alone the whole time doing self-reflection. snooze fest. so unless you loved (or liked, or even tolerated - like me) the book, wait for something else to get your julia roberts fix.

day 2.248

taylor swift is "mine"
ms. swift's latest single, "mine," has leaked onto the internets. the song is in her wheelhouse of bubbly country pop love song, so it's nothing new or exciting. just more of the same. the one plus is taytay has moved on from high school, kind of. the song talks about the boy being in college so...check out the song below. i understand taylor wants to play it safe and not lose any fans, but she's going to have to grow and evolve to stay in the industry. her career will plateau within five years if she doesn't do something game changing. or at least adult. take some cues from carrie underwood - she started out with a song about jesus, then busted up some guys car and became country's resident pop star. check out the song below.

the vma's are coming!
mtv has released the nominations for this year's video music awards. not surprisingly, lady gaga got the most noms with 13, the most for any artist ever in the history of the show. here's a list of the major categories and who i think will be taking home the moon man at the end of the night. there's a lot of repetition and quite a few snubs, but i'll get to those at the end.

video of the year
  • 30 second to mars, "kings and queens"
  • b.o.b. featuring hailey williams, "airplanes"
  • eminem, "not afraid"
  • florence + the machine, "dog days are over"
  • lady gaga, "bad romance"
  • lady gaga featuring beyonce, "telephone"
best collaboration
  • 3oh!3 featuring ke$ha, "my first kiss"
  • b.o.b. featuring hailey williams, "airplanes"
  • beyonce featuring lady gaga, "video phone"
  • lady gaga featuring beyonce, "telephone"
  • jay-z featuring alicia keys, "empire state of mind"
best female video
  • beyonce featuring lady gaga, "video phone"
  • katy perry featuring snoop dogg, "california gurls"
  • ke$ha, "tik tok"
  • lady gaga, "bad romance" - see video above
  • taylor swift, "fifteen"
best male video
  • b.o.b. featuring hailey williams, "airplanes"
  • drake, "find your love"
  • eminem, "not afraid"
  • jason derulo, "in my head"
  • usher featuring will.i.am., "omg"
best new artist
  • broken bells, "the ghost inside"
  • jason derulo, "in my head"
  • justin bieber featuring ludacris, "baby"
  • ke$ha, "tik tok"
  • nicki minaj featuring sean garrett, "massive attack"
best pop video
  • b.o.b. featuring bruno mars, "nothing on you"
  • beyonce featuring lady gaga, "video phone"
  • ke$ha, "tik tok"
  • lady gaga, "bad romance"
  • katy perry, "california gurls"
every year, mtv attempts to maintain their music credibility by throwing in videos/songs/artists that are relatively unknown. while we all know those people will never win (hello broken bells...who the hell are you anyway?) it is nice for them to get some exposure. on the flip side, people who have had big years (like miley cyrus - "party in the usa" is no where to be found - and justin bieber, who got one nod and one nod only) get bumped out of categories. you can't please everyone, but i don't know if putting lady gaga in every category is fair for a fan-voted show. fan-voted shows are never really fair, though. oh well. the show airs september 12 on mtv. a host is yet to be announced. click here to see the full list of nominees and learn more about the show.

August 2, 2010

day 2.246

just blurbs
there really isn't anything to write about, so here are some little thoughts you can marinate on.

  • lindsay lohan is officially out of jail, but don't expect to see her on the interview circuit just yet. the pretty much former actress (though, she did film a movie with the sham-wow guy...scram bracelet intact) went straight to rehab at ucla. she's reportedly being treated for bipolar disorder and meth addiction. she'll be there for at least 90 days, on her own dime, with no chance of early release.
  • the only sure thing about american idol's next season is ryan seacrest. randy jackson told e news he has no clue what the next season holds. he may not even be included. the latest rumors are that randy will stick around - producer nigel lythgoe reportedly decided he didn't want to completely overhaul the show - alongside jennifer lopez and aerosmith's steven tyler. an official announcement should be out soon as preliminary auditions are going on across the country as i type.
  • i'm pretty sure the kim kardashian miles austin rumors are true. why else would kim k be tweeting with candice crawford, sister to chace and girlfriend to miles' cowboys cohort tony romo?
  • two big movies have been cast: sandra bullock and steve carrel will play love interests in the abstinence teacher, about an outspoken sex-ed teacher (bullock) and the conservative dad (carrel) she falls for ... meryl streep and tina fey are set to star as mother and daughter in mommy & me, directed by streep's recent constant costar stanley tucci. no word on what the plot is, but how can they screw that up?
hopefully those little bites will tide you over until something juicier comes along.

August 1, 2010

day 2.245

tomorrow
lindsay lohan gets out of jail. allegedly. then she goes to rehab for meth and bipolar disorder. let's take tonight to reflect on how safe our streets are before lilo starts terrorizing them again.
