day 4.77

she returns!

the promos for lindsay lohan's fourth outing as host of saturday night live hit the interwebs today and did two things to me -- made me incredibly excited (i mean, all her hosted-shows have been top notch ... i mean, she was in the first "debbie downer" sketch) and google "cheek implants." seriously, what is going on with her face? and why has no one sat her down and explained bangs and blonde do not a redhead make? i guess it's one step at a time - sobriety, then redhead. what didn't make me so excited was this promo (below) for lilo's interview with matt lauer set to air tomorrow on today. did she really just say whitney houston's death didn't resonate ... at all? someone dropping dead at 48 after a public battle with drugs and alcohol didn't resonate at all? really? lohan appears very uncomfortable in interviews -- a far cry from her pre-public meltdown days. maybe the full length talk will be better? let's hope. let's also hope her cheeks settle by saturday.

day 4.75

better than the oscars

i'm living for this today.

meet carrie bradshaw, circa 1980something
annasophia robb is one lucky lady today. the soul surfer star landed one of the most coveted roles this pilot season - carrie bradshaw in the cw's sex and the city prequel series, the carrie diaries. the charlie and the chocolate factory beauty reportedly beat out emma roberts for the plum part. robb will play high school carrie, as she explores love, sex, friends and manhattan all for the first time. if this goes to series (which, who are we kidding, it will), robb will no doubt become a megastar (think gossip girl's blake lively). the series isn't expected to feature miranda, samantha or charlotte - at least not right away - so robb will get the satc spotlight for a few seasons. i'd say this is spot on casting ... and i can't wait to see her all '80s-ed out in jordache and the like.

day 4.70

movie review: this means war

for the past couple of weeks, i've been treating myself to a movie. and by "treating myself" i mean i go alone to the theater on wednesday afternoons, drink a medium coke and laugh/cry/feel emotions amongst the geriatric crowd that favors a weekday matinee. so far, i haven't reviewed any because my policy (on this blog) is usually, if i didn't see it opening weekend, it's too late to review it. but i'm throwing my rule book out the window for this means war. i don't understand why this movie didn't open bigger. it. is. hilarious. i won't bore you with too many details, but the flick follows fdr (star trek's chris pine) and tuck (inception's tom hardy), two cia operatives, as they vie for the attention of the same girl (reese witherspoon as lauren), all while trying to take down an obscure, eastern european criminal. mcg directed war, taking the same tongue-in-cheek approach to action comedy he did in the charlie's angels movies. war's most quotable- and memorable- moments come from chelsea handler, playing witherspoon's horndog housewife of a bff, trish. for example, after discussing (loudly) when lauren should bed both guys in the middle of a playground, she tells the other mothers, "it's the birds and the bees, bitch. google it." how can you not love that? while this won't win any awards (maybe a razzie if they're feeling especially mean), it'll keep you entertained. plus, it passes my "please be less than two hours or i'm going to die at this movie" rule.

day 4.69

so this happened...

so, taylor swift can be funny? and they sing!

day 4.68

rihanna, chris brown set back domestic violence movement
um, what pr team let this happen. it's no secret that three years ago chris brown beat rihanna, sending her to the hospital and forcing both stars to pull out of the 2009 grammys. it's also no secret that rihanna publicly pled to never go back to brown, telling barbra walters it would set a bad example for her young fans. but now it looks like rihanna might be eating her words - a little bit. there's no confirmation that the duo is back together romantically (in fact, tmz has plenty of pics of brown and his new girlfriend frolicking on the beach) but they are together musically. in honor of rihanna's birthday, the duo each released remixes of their new singles, featuring the other. rihanna dropped a full-length version of "birthday cake," and brown premiered a new version of "turn up the music." my biggest problem here? both songs are so catchy that they'll get plenty of radio play -- and people will probably forget about what happened.

"birthday cake"

"turn up the music"

sometimes i wish i were famous...

so i could do stuff like this with my other famous friends, ya know? selena gomez, justin bieber, ashley tisdale and the boys of big time rush (amongst others) got together to create a viral video for their friend, canadian pop star carly rae jepsen's new single "call me maybe." the song is catchy, but the video's better.

new girl: you decide?

chances are you've checked out one of this season's breakout hits, "new girl," staring the "adorkable" (their word, definitely not mine) zooey deschanel. and chances are, if you've seen the show, you've gotten its theme song stuck in your head. well now you can get it stuck in your head all over again while interacting with the cast. sort of. fox released an "interactive" music video for the theme song. so, go interact.

album review: born to die, lana del rey
chances are you caught lana del rey's not-so-stellar tv debut on saturday night live last month. forget it. so, the girl's not a live performer. what she is a killer song writer. del rey (real name, lizzy grant)'s debut, born to die, is a mixed bag of melancholy ballads and catchy choruses sure to get stuck in your head. here are some of the stand out tracks.

"off to the races"

this song will take a couple listens, but trust- you'll love it. del rey moves from deep voiced sing-speak to flowing melody to punchy chorus. she name calls bacardi- how can you not love it?

"radio"

most of born to die is made for move soundtracks ... or a nivea commercial. this is one of those songs.

"diet mountain dew"

the other half is calling out for a rap remix (think kanye, or even childish gambino). "diet mountain dew" is an anthem about love in new york ... and maybe diet soda that melts animal carcasses. i'm not really sure.

"summertime sadness"

a lot of del rey's songs seem to follow the same story arc, with recurring themes of red dresses and death. fun stuff, right? "summertime sadness" is part of that series, which also includes "races" (above), "born to die" and "video games."

that's just a small preview- definitely check out all of del rey's debut on spotify.
