day 4.03

there might not have been a new glee this week...

movie review: young adult

instant classic. diablo cody and jason reitman's latest collaboration, young adult, is basically what would happen if we got to see a character form a john hughes movie all grown up. charlize theron stars as mavis, a 37-year-old young adult author still living like a young adult- example: her meals consist of ben & jerrys and an episode of the kardashians. mavis treks back to her minnesota hometown in hopes of landing the one that got away, buddy (morning glory's patrick wilson). the thing is- buddy recently had a baby and that's the only reason mavis wants him back. as mavis tries to win back buddy, she's also tasked with finishing the final book in her series. her book begins to mirror the action in her real life, as both she and her character realize going home isn't alway the best thing. alcoholically stumbling through each day, mavis can't seem to get it together. a newfound friendship with former high school geek matt (patton oswalt) doesn't help either, as mavis is forced to directly face how horrible she was in high school. young adult is no light comedy- it's very dark and very real, so don't expect a pick-me-up at the movie theater. instead, expect to feel for the very real, very flawed characters cody created and walk away feeling really good about yourself. well, unless you sympathize with mavis. then expect to feel pretty bad.

vicki gunvalson has a new face...

and there's a brunette. the new season of the real housewives of orange county premieres february 7.

what i love (this week)

the song

this song has been stuck in my head since robyn's snl appearance last weekend.

the show

it was like the early 2000s again last night on snl! the weekend update joke off? phenomenal.

the movie

i watched this on netflix instant. so bad it was good. sarah jessica parker has seriously only ever played one character.

the look

every month, the olsen twins release a new viral video to promote their t-shirt club, stylemint. it's like seeing what they would do if they had never stopped making olsen twin movies.

day 3.363

golden globes 2012
it's the most wonderful time of the year. no, not the holiday season (though- that's happening, too). it's award season time! the hollywood foreign press association released its list of nominees for next year's awards. let's discuss.

best motion picture - drama
  • the descendants
  • the help
  • hugo
  • ides of march
  • moneyball
  • war horse
well, i guess i'm going to have to see war horse now (i try to see all major award contenders). ugh- it didn't get a sag nod, so i thought i could avoid it. the disconnect between the golden globe and the screen actors guild nominees have basically blown awards season wide open. i'd expect the descendants to take this category- it has the most universal appeal and the most credibility. the help might be a close second, and hugo just made it in there because martin scorsese directed it.

best performance by an actress in a motion picture - drama
  • glenn close, albert nobbs
  • viola davis, the help
  • rooney mara, the girl with the dragon tattoo
  • meryl streep, the iron lady
  • tilda swinton, we need to talk about kevin
this category is super political. glenn close and meryl streep got nods because, well, they're glenn close and merly streep. rooney mara took one because award shows love a "pretty girl goes ugly" story. and tilda swinton? she's an anomaly. i'm betting viola davis gets a globe for her turn in the help.

best performance by an actor in a motion picture - drama
  • george clooney, the descendants
  • leonardo dicaprio, j. edgar
  • michael fassbender, shame
  • ryan gosling, the ides of march
  • brad pitt, moneyball
clooney! clooney! clooney! george is the only guy in this category who delivered an award-worthy performance this year. also, his is the only performance i've seen (damn, i've got some catching up to do). leonardo dicaprio tried so hard for an award with j. edgar, but it's just not going to pay off. fassbender? good luck landing an award with an nc-17 flick. ryan gosling can wait his turn, and they just nominated brad pitt to ensure he and angie show up.

best motion picture - comedy or musical
  • 50/50
  • the artist
  • bridesmaids
  • midnight in paris
  • my week with marilyn
i would argue half the movies on this list are not comedies, but the hfpa just didn't know what to do with them. i refuse to sit through a silent movie, even if it's getting all the buzz. yes, i'm looking at you, the artist. bridesmaids is the only true comedy in this bunch, but i'm sure dramedy my week with marilyn will take home the statue.

best performance by an actress in a motion picture - comedy or musical
  • jodie foster, carnage
  • charlize theron, young adult
  • kristen wiig, bridesmaids
  • michelle williams, my week with marilyn
  • kate winslet, carnage
i will be so disappointed if kristen wiig doesn't win. cut to me being disappointed, yet happy, when michelle williams wins for her two-hour marilyn impression. it was good,  but wiig's my girl. sidenote- can't wait to see carnage and young adult, but i doubt any performance in those will beat out williams.

best performance by an actor in a motion picture - comedy or musical
  • jean dujardin, the artist
  • brendan gleeson, the guard
  • joseph gordon-levitt, 50/50
  • ryan gosling, crazy stupid love
  • owen wilson, midnight in paris
yeah, this category is weird. gosling was definitely a supporting actor in crazy stupid love. dujardin can't even speak english, so i don't want to listen through his attempt at an acceptance speech. who the hell is brendan gleeson and wtf is the guard? i haven't seen 50/50 so, by default, i'm giving this to owen wilson since i saw- and really enjoyed- midnight in paris.

best performance by an actress in a supporting role in a motion picture
  • berenice bejo, the artist
  • jessica chastain, the help
  • janet mcteer, albert nobbs
  • octavia spencer, the help
  • shailene woodley, the descendants
this category is both brilliant and some bullshit. um, ever heard of melissa mccarthy, hollywood foreign press association? you know, the girl who stole every effing scene in bridesmaids. the one who won an emmy for her role in mike & molly bridesmaids? yeah, big oversight. huge oversight. but, anyway ... i'm all about the help, but i think chastain and spencer will cancel each other out and shailene woodley will take home the statue. i mean, she cried underwater in the descendants. cried. under. water. this will be the perfect "let me out my contract on secret life, please!" moment.

best performance by an actor in a supporting role in a motion picture
  • kenneth branagh, my week with marilyn
  • albert brooks, drive
  • jonah hill, moneyball
  • viggo mortenson, a dangerous method
  • christopher plummer, beginners
i'd call this the weakest category of the golden globes. i mean, jonah hill? really? from what i've heard, plummer is brilliant in beginners, and he'll take it home.

best television series - drama
  • american horror story
  • boardwalk empire
  • boss
  • game of thrones
  • homeland
so, network tv is officially dead i guess. no revenge? no parenthood? what's your damage, hfpa? boardwalk empire's bound to take this category, but american horror story and homeland offer some pretty stiff competition.

best performance by an actress in a television series - drama
  • claire danes, homeland
  • mireille enos, the killing
  • julianna margulies, the good wife
  • madeline stowe, revenge
  • callie thorne, necessary roughness
claire danes. award shows love a movie star-turned-tv star, and danes is a child star-turned-tv-star-turned-movie-star-turned-tv-star, so, yeah... i was pleasantly surprised to see madeline stowe get a nod for her icy turn as victoria grayson on revenge- at least the show is getting some love! and i'll just disregard that whole necessary roughness nod. someone at the hollywood press association has a boner for the usa network and that's that.

best performance by an actor in a television series - drama
  • steve buscemi, boardwalk empire
  • bryan cranston, breaking bad
  • kelsey grammer, boss
  • jeremy irons, the borgias
  • damian lewis, homeland
buscemi? i have no clue on this category. i don't think anyone is even watching kelsey grammer on boss. i mean, it's on starz. camille grammer is more famous than kelsey now. bryan cranston's an award show fave, so he could bump buscemi.

best television series - comedy or musical
  • enlightened
  • episodes
  • glee
  • modern family
  • new girl
no happy endings? no cougar town? no parks and recreation? no 30 rock? community? up all night? to be honest, this category could be doubled in size. modern family is bound to win.

best performance by an actress in a television series - comedy
  • laura dern, enlightened
  • zooey deschanel, new girl
  • tina fey, 30 rock
  • amy poehler, parks and recreation
  • laura linney, the big c
poehler for the win! as a recent parks and rec convert, leslie knope is my current spirit animal. but chances are the hfpa will upset me and give it to laura linney, as it tends to favor a more dramatic comedy. don't even get me started on kat dennings and beth behrs getting no recognition for 2 broke girls

best performance by an actor in a television series - comedy
  • alec baldwin, 30 rock
  • johnny galecki, the big bang theory
  • david duchovny, californication
  • thomas jane, hung
  • matt leblanc, episodes
um ... i don't know. baldwin? it's definitely galecki's turn to win, but i doubt he will. duchovny and jane are both more dramatic and matt leblanc plays himself so, yeah, i don't know.

best performance by a supporting actress in a television series
  • jessica lange, american horror story
  • kelly macdonald, boardwalk empire
  • maggie smith, downton abbey
  • sofia vergara, modern family
  • evan rachel wood, mildred pierce
i hate, hate, hate the supporting categories at the golden globes because they seem like an after thought. like, seriously, can't comedy, drama and mini-series/made-for-tv movie have their own categories? so many people missed out on this category because of how jam packed it is. plus, it's too hard to judge comedy talent against dramatic talent. i'm pulling for jessica lange here- no one pulls off crazy like her- but i could see sofia vergara taking home the title, too.

best performance by a supporting actor in a television series
  • peter dinklage, game of thrones
  • paul giamatti, too big to fail
  • guy pearce, mildred pierce
  • tim robbins, cinema verite
  • eric stonestreet, modern family
see my previous rant. i'm hoping for a stonestreet win.

to see the rest of the nominees and make your own predictions, click here. the golden globes air january 15 on nbc. sadly, ricky gervais is returning as host. womp womp.

December 14, 2011

day 3.362

guys, lana del rey.

her music is mad depressing, but i can't stop listening. check out lana del rey's latest single, "born to die," live at the chateau marmont (above). then watch the just released music video for the track. like, why can't i stop? how can you be happy and sad at the same time? make me stop. or don't. whatever.

December 13, 2011

day 3.361

tom cruise sings!
well, i assume he does. just not in the trailer. check out this jam-packed preview of rock of ages, the big screen adaptation of the blockbuster broadway musical. alec badlwin, julianne hough, catherine zeta jones and, yes, tom cruise star in the '80s-set rock-drama. i'm in.

December 12, 2011

day 3.360

too busy to blog
story of my life. am i right?

December 11, 2011

day 3.359

what i love (this week)

the song

if you haven't given rihanna's talk that talk a spin, you're missing out. get on spotify and start with "do ya thang." now. do it.

the show
i've recently become obsessed with parks and recreation. i'd never given the show a chance, writing it off as an office rip-off, but it's so, so, so much better than the office. amy poehler is a god.
the movie
yes, i gave two hours of my life to new year's eve. it's just as disjointed as its predecessor, valentine's day, but a little more entertaining. i won't give a full-blown review, but i will tell you to give it a chance. especially if you can purchase alcohol at your theater (or bring your own). the best part is the 10 minute bloopers reel that plays with the credits, half of which is zac efron and the over-frumped michelle pfeiffer dancing. had the whole two hours been zac and michelle dancing i would have been happy.

the look

the "look section" has kind of become a "my favorite snl sketches section." sorry i'm not sorry. katy perry as florence and the machine and kristen wiig as flirt expert rebecca larue = insane.

December 10, 2011

day 3.358

tonight
this is happening. i don't know why katy perry isn't also the musical guest, but i'm guessing she'll sing in approximately half her sketches.

December 5, 2011

day 3.352

movie trailer madness
check out three movies i'll probably see- the five year engagement, the three stooges and what to expect when you're expecting. only one looks good (the first), but whatever.

December 4, 2011

day 3.351

what i love (this week)

the song
childish gambino just made his way into my itunes (i know, i'm late to the party). donald glover (yes, the guy from community raps) brings it on his original ep, culdesac, especially on "do ya like," which samples adele. fyi- glover just released camp, his second album, on itunes.

the show
it's like extreme makeover: home edition for aspiring models.

the movie
one of the best made-for-tv christmas movies, am i right?

the look

maya rudolph is a genius.

December 3, 2011

day 3.350

this.
i've recently become obsessed with parks and recreation, which makes this funny or die sketch that much better.

December 2, 2011

day 3.349

2012 year end mashup much?
done.

December 1, 2011

day 3.348

grammys noms
the nominees, my picks for winners and who i think got snubbed:

record of the year
  • "rolling in the deep," adele
  • "holocede," bon iver
  • "grenade," bruno mars
  • "the cave," mumford & sons
  • "firework," katy perry
i mean, the only person who could beat adele would be adele if "someone like you" were nominated.

album of the year
  • 21, adele
  • wasting light, foo fighters
  • born this way, lady gaga
  • doo-wops and hooligans, bruno mars
  • loud, rihanna
um adele. again. it's the year of adele, guys. my only question- why not katy perry's teenage dream? unless the album was only up for a nomination last year ... i'm too lazy to check into the grammy rules and regulations. but, that has to be a reason, because there's no way one of the most successful female pop albums of all time doesn't get a nomination.

song of the year
  • "all of the lights," kanye featuring everyone
  • "the cave," mumford & sons
  • "grenade," bruno mars
  • "holocene," bon iver
  • "rolling in the deep," adele
adele.

best new artist
  • the band perry
  • bon iver
  • j. cole
  • nicki minaj
  • skrillex
guys, i've actually heard of all the nominees this year! i would choose nicki minaj, but based on the other nominations this year, expect bon iver to grad this award. even though they've been around for at least five years.

best pop solo performance
  • "someone like you," adele
  • "you and i," lady gaga
  • "grenade," bruno mars
  • "firework," katy perry
  • "f-in perfect," p!nk
this is the one adele-centric award i can see not-adele taking home. and by non-adele, i mean p!nk.

best pop duo/group performance
  • "body and soul," tony bennett and amy winehouse
  • "dearest," the black keys
  • "paradise," coldplay
  • "pumped up kicks," foster the people
  • "moves like jagger," maroon 5 feat. christina aguilera
this is a tricky category. they could give it to "body and soul" as a way to pay remembrance to amy winehouse, or go with one of the biggest songs of the year- "moves like jagger," which could be squeaked out by "pumped up kicks" for all i know.

best pop vocal album
  • 21, adele
  • the lady killer, cee-lo green
  • born this way, lady gaga
  • loud, rihanna
  • doo-wops and hooligans, bruno mars
really? vocals = adele.

best rock performance
  • "every teardrop is a waterfall," coldplay
  • "down by the water," the decemberists
  • "walk," foo fighters
  • "the cave," mumford & sons
  • "lotus flower," radiohead
mr. gwyneth paltrow. hands down.

best rap/sung collaboration
  • "party," beyonce featuring andre 3000
  • "i'm on one," dj khaled, drake, rick ross and lil wayne
  • "i need a doctor," dr. dre, eminem and skylar grey
  • "what's my name," rihanna featuring drake
  • "motivation," kelly rowland and lil wayne
  • "all of the lights," kanye, rihanna, kid cudi and fergie
will they give it to beyonce because she missed out on every other nomination, or rihanna for one of the catchiest songs of the year? i'm thinking riri.

best rap song
  • "all of the lights," kanye featuring everyone
  • "black and yellow," wiz khalifa
  • "i need a doctor," dr. dre, eminem and skylar grey
  • "look at me now," chris brown featuring busta rhymes and lil wayne
  • "otis," jay-z and kanye
  • "the show goes on," lupe fiasco
watch the throne. watch the throne. watch the throne. if that album doesn't win one grammy it'll be a major issue. for me and everyone else.

best rap album
  • watch the throne, kanye west and jay-z
  • the carter iv, lil wayne
  • lasers, lupe fiasco
  • pink friday, nicki minaj
  • my beautiful dark twisted fantasy, kanye west
while "superbass" was one of the songs of the year, pink friday really isn't that great of an album. know what a great album is? watch the throne.

to see more nominations- like all the country categories- click here. the grammys air february 12 at 8/7c on cbs.

victoria's secret fashion show 2011
or as i like to call it, the body issues and boners special. i'm not reviewing the fashions. actually, i'm not reviewing anything- just watch these awesome performances from tonight's broadcast. kanye, jay-z, maroon 5 and nicki minaj all shut it down on stage.

day 3.344

what i love (this week)

the song
i found tessa and the typecast's "hold on 'til morning" where i find all my music, in an ad. it's the perfect summer-sounding song to get you through this intro-to-winter weather everyone but california seems to be experiencing now.

the show
i know we won't get to see the full kim and kris fallout, but i can't resist. i watched the kardashian empire rise and i'll watch it fall.

the movie
it's the one movie i saw in the last week that didn't include in my mass review yesterday, so ... here it is? it's the best looking of the saga- director bill condon isn't in to the whole shaky cam, dark and dreary look that the previous directors adopted.

the look book(s)
this week i'm bringing back the books. it's been a while since i've reviewed a recent read and that's because, well, i haven't read recently. but this week, copious amounts of travel time let me knock out two great reads (and, fyi, both will make great gifts). first, mindy kaling's is everyone hanging out without me (and other concerns). i love a good title, especially one i can relate to- this is a question i ask myself all the time- is sure to reel me in. the promise of laughs? even better. kaling, who you might know as kelly kapoor from the office, offers life highlights, starting with her life as a chubby androgynous suburban kid to popular-girl-in-her-head to struggling artist to the fame and fortune of hollywood. it'll have you laughing from cover to cover, with plenty of relatable stories and insight into the office you never knew you needed.

robert rave's conversations and cosmopolitans, co-written by his mom, jane, is another hard-to-put-down read. i've raved (pun fully intended) about rave's fictional works spin and waxed before, but this book's a little different. c&c is a memoir following rave's relationship with his mom post-childhood. it all begins with rave finally coming out to his mom and weaves through the duo's strengthened bond as they navigate weight watchers meetings, new york nightlife and life's little miseries together, all with a side of snark and loving humor. if you have a mom, or know someone who has a mom (that means everyone if you didn't catch on), this is a must-read.

November 26, 2011

day 3.343

oscar movie watch 2011
it's that time of year again- every holiday season, tons of movies hit the silver screen as oscar bait. here are a few of my favorites that i've seen so far.

movie review: like crazy
if i had to sum up like crazy in a phrase it would be "shitfaced love story." the film follows 20somethings jacob and anna as they fall in love just before college graduation. the catch is anna's a british citizen and only in the states on a student visa. when her visa runs out, anna decides to stick it out for the summer for the sake of her relationship. at the end of the summer, anna heads home for a family wedding, planning to return to california at the end of the week. catch two: customs stops anna when she lands at lax and sends her straight back to london for breaking her visa. what follows is a long distance, often drunk, relationship interrupted by time zones, tests (like jennifer lawrence's samantha), a marriage and extreme heartache. this is definitely not a feel good movie, and ends on somewhat of an unsure note, but is a must see for anyone that's been in love or wants to be in love- so everyone.

movie review: the descendants
george clooney secures himself another oscar nod with the descendants. clooney stars as matt king, a hawaiian family man faced with two major dilemmas: his family owns a the so-called last plot of virgin hawaiian land that needs to be sold asap to avoid turmoil, and his wife's in the hospital with a coma after a major boat accident. king must balance his kids- highschooler alex (secret life of the american teenager's shailene woodley) and pre-teen troublemaker scottie- his relatives and his wife's decreasing medical condition. throw in the discovery that his wife was cheating on him right before the accident and king's world goes from unstable to upside down. the only person able to upstage clooney is woodley, who proves she really can act. as clooney said, "she fucking cries under water." expect woodley to grab some major award nods, too, and hopefully leave secret life behind when her contract's up in 2013.

movie review: my week with marilyn
if michelle williams doesn't win an oscar for this, she will have been robbed. williams completely transforms into screen legend marilyn monroe, circa 1957. monroe heads to london to film the prince and the showgirl, alongside sir laurence olivier (played brilliantly by kenneth branagh). adapted from colin clark's memoir, the movie follows clark as the third assistant director or "gopher," meaning he can "go for this, go for that" at the drop of a hat. clark winds up being one of the few people monroe, insecure and fragile, trusts on set. the duo- monroe, 30, and clark, just 24- form an unlikely pair, leading to a puppy love affair. there's not one bad performance in my week, making it one to watch for every category this award season.

day 3.325

i love emma stone
this is why.

November 8, 2011

day 3.324

she's still making music, guys
she's got to have something relevant to play at the super bowl, right? the queen of reinvention goes back to her roots on this demo track for "give me all your love." madonna sounds her '80s-best, but throws in some of her '90s flair on the track that references a lot of her former hits. check it out above, and expect a full-edit to hit radio asap.

November 7, 2011

day 3.323

must listen: cher lloyd's sticks + stones
if you don't know who cher lloyd is, you're missing out- but, i'm here to help. lloyd placed in the finals of last year's uk x factor. lloyd didn't win, but her pop-rap sensibility screams "bring me to america." her debut album, sticks + stones, dropped overseas and i can't stop playing it here, stateside. give some of my top picks a spin, below.

"grow up," ft. busta rhymes
this is my favorite off the ep, a peter pan-themed anthem featuring busta rhymes. it'll give you a good snapshot of the sound lloyd brings to the table.

"beautiful people," ft. carolina liar
lloyd brings the boys of carolina liar in on this bluesy ballad. if you've ever wanted to tell someone off in a sad, reflective way, then this is the song for you.

"with ur love," ft. mike posner
by now you've probably noticed a theme- collaborations are key on stick + stones. "with ur love" is the second official single off the album- you'll find it hard to get out of your head after a listen. or two. or three.

"over the moon"
a track without someone featured on it? unheard of! "over the moon" does feature the catchiest hook off the album, and the most original rapping by lloyd.

definitely check out the rest of cher's debut- you won't be disappointed. most of the album is available on spotify, so what are you waiting for?

November 6, 2011

day 3.323

what i love (this week)

the song
this plus the justin bieber "freestyle" are really working for me this week.

the show
they're baaaaaaaaaaaaack (tonight).

the movie
here's my mini-review for justin timberlake and amanda seyfried's in time: go see it. it's bonnie and clyde meets robin hood meets the matrix meets the island meets ... i don't know, just go watch it, ok?

the look
so it's not really a look, just a glee-tastic viral video worth sharing. you have to watch the whole :43 second clip. i know, tough duty. suck it up.

November 5, 2011

the real (precious) housewives of atlanta

gabourey sidibe popped up on the wendy williams show this week, joined by a new segment: "hairpiece theater." watch as wendy and gabby recreate a scene between kim zolciak and nene leakes. wendy totally lifted this bit from bonnie hunt, but who cares?

November 3, 2011

day 3.320

hill, tatum head to 21 jump street
gawker calls it "never been kissed with guns." sounds about right- and good- to me. check out jonah hill and channing tatum in the trailer for the new version of 21 jump street. rumor is there's a johnny depp cameo (he starred in '80s series that inspired the film) in the film's final cut.

hilarious
tim gunn does pre-school. "i think this is refrigerator material."

November 2, 2011

what could've been
if you were a fan on abc family's greek like i was, then chances are you were disappointed by how open ended the finale left casey's storyline. well worry no more- an alternate ending to the college comedy popped up online today! in this version, all the graduates return to cyprus-rhodes to see rusty and friends walk in cap and gown two years later. get a few more answers and some closure in the alternate ending, above.

the final installment in the american pie franchise won't hit theaters until april, but here's the first full-length trailer for the flick. should be a fitting send-off for jim & co.

October 31, 2011

day 3.317

today was the best day
this happened.

then this happened.

you would've thought it were april fools, but happy halloween!

October 30, 2011

day 3.316

what i love (this week)

the song
good cold weather music.

the show
i wish this show were on every night. drew's my pick to take it all.

the movie
it's halloween. how could you not want to watch this?

the look
thank god someone helped her with her teeth. next stop: blonde intervention. embrace the ginge, linds.

October 29, 2011

day 3.315

can she just release a covers album?
at almost every stop on her "speak now" tour, taylor swift has covered a song by a famous musician who calls the city she's in home. sometimes, she even gets the person she's honoring on stage with her- like she did in austin, tx with shawn colvin. the somewhat forgotten folk artist joined t. swift to perform "sunny came home." this is the kind of music taylor needs to work on for her next release, right? right. check out the performance above.

October 28, 2011

day 3.314

bieber's ready for christmas
it's not even november yet, but the music community is ready for christmas. everyone from michael buble to zooey deschanel is releasing a christmas album this year, but the biggest name- and sure-to-be biggest seller of the season- has to be mr. justin bieber. the bieb's leaked a few tracks off his upcoming ep, under the mistletoe, set to be released nov. 1. check out the music video for "mistletoe," alongside collaborations with mariah carey, boyz ii men and usher, below.

side note: the bieb's management said his "balls have dropped, vocally." really. i'm not making that up. also, who decides to keep casting girls who are so much taller and look so much older than justin in his videos? selena wasn't available?

October 27, 2011

day 3.313

the lorax returns!
dr. seuss's eco-infotainment story finally makes it to the big screen. check out the trailer for the lorax, above. no lie, probably going to see this one.

beyonce's "party"
the full-length version of beyonce's video for "party" finally hit the web. b swaps out andre 3000 for j. cole on this version of the track. the video's really just an excuse for beyonce to dabble with as many trashy looks as she can.

October 26, 2011

day 3.312

music review: kelly clarkson, coldplay
two of my favorites- kelly clarkson and coldplay, dropped new albums this week. on the same day. so, basically, i'm having an eargasm right now and think you should, too. here are my top picks from their latests-

kelly clarkson, stronger
clarkson's finally finds a balance between the four different sides she has shown on her four previous releases. stronger mixes the r&b of thankful, the pop power of breakway, the rocker edge of my december and energy of all i ever wanted. the title track, "what doesn't kill you (stronger)," is the stand-out- it's got a catchy chorus, builds on the beat and you'll find yourself singing along before your first listen's even done.

"you can't win" is another solid single, the most reminiscent of breakaway. it's the rockier cousin of katy perry's "firework."

and clarkson dabbles in country pop with "einstein," a bitter bye-bye anthem, similar to beyonce's "irreplacable."

stronger may be my second favorite clarkson ep after breakway- let's be honest, nothing's ever topping that.

coldplay, mylo xyoloto
coldplay continues to experiment with its sound on mylo xyoloto. with few radio friendly tracks, this is definitely a record for the fans. it's sound falls somewhere between smash hit viva la vida and launching pad x & y. the best track is the band's collaboration with rihanna, "princess of china." the song's catchy on its own, but adding rihanna makes it that much more commercial.

the album's lead single is also a must-listen. you can't help but feel like you're in a 90s movie montage when you listen to it. and who doesn't want to be in a 90s movie montage?

and the track reminding me the most of colplay's early efforts has to be "charlie brown," a get-up-and-dance-by-yourself jam.

definitely check out both artists' latest- i don't think you'll be disappointed. and don't miss kelly when she performs as part of vh1's divas celebrate soul on december 19.

October 25, 2011

day 3.311

oh, simone
so about two seconds after getting the boot from x factor, simone battle snatched up a mic and plugged her first single, "he likes boys." naturally, i went searching for the music video (above). while simone can't sing live to save her life, she does have pop star potential. the song is pretty crappy, but still stuck in my head somehow. and she recreated a scene from clueless for the music video, so there's that.

October 24, 2011

day 3.310

beyonce's ready to "party"

pre-prego beyonce sure did film a lot of music videos. or she's not really pregnant and wearing a prosthetic. either, or- i'm glad we're getting a video for pretty much every song on 4. check out this sneak peek of b's latest, "party" - look out for cameos by sister solange and kelly former bandmate kelly rowland. can "schoolin' life" be up next? please.

October 23, 2011

day 3.309

what i love (this week)

the song
i haven't been able to get this song out of my head ever since they danced to it on 2 broke girls.

the show
giving it a chance this week. hmm.

the movie
the 90s, start to finish.

the look
i mean.

October 22, 2011

day 3.308

oh god
i can't wait to read suri's thoughts on this.

October 21, 2011

day 3.307

reese witherspoon in "war" with chelsea handler
the trailer for reese witherspoon's romcom comeback, this means war, hit the interwebs this week. witherspoon stars alongside star trek star chris pine and british badass of the moment tom hardy, two secret operatives who discover they're dating the same woman. naturally, hilarity ensues. the reason i'm looking forward to this flick is for reese's bff- chelsea handler. the funny lady plays wingman to witherspoon. hopefully all her one-liners aren't wasted in the trailer.

October 20, 2011

day 3.306

rihanna "found love in a crowded place"
rihanna released the official video for her latest single, "we found love in a crowded place," and wow. it's like an acid trip of gifs. plus there's the whole "doesn't the guy in this video look like chris brown when he died his hair blonde?" thing. weird video aside, it's the catchiest song riri's dropped since "umbrella."

October 19, 2011

October 18, 2011

day 3.304

i think it's safe to say our love affair with selena gomez is still on...
right? right.

October 17, 2011

day 2.304

britney's in love with a "criminal," beyonce's "love on top"
creatively avoiding choreography. again.

creative use of choreography. again. lack of baby bump.

October 16, 2011

day 3.303

what i love (this week)

the song
so most of kelly clarkson's new album, stronger, was leaked. by kelly. here's the title track. the album hits shelves next tuesday, oct. 25.

the show
love me some tim allen.

the movie
go see this movie. you'll like it. no matter who you are, you'll like it.

the look
her poor teeth.

October 15, 2011

day 3.292 - day 3.302

i've gotten a little behind on blogging. but i'm back!

October 6, 2011

day 3.291

charlize theron is a young adult
video platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player
"mavis, i'm a married man." "i know- we can beat this thing. together."

diablo cody and jason reitman (the team behind juno) + charlize theron? can. not. wait.

October 5, 2011

day 3.290

it's back!
diablo cody's genius talk show in an airstream, red band trailer, returns to the internets for a second season! the show made the move from youtube to the lexus-backed "l series" video site ... aka, lexus is paying for this now. and i couldn't figure out how to embed it so you can click here to watch the premiere of season two with john krasinski.

October 4, 2011

day 3.289

beyonce previews "countdown"
this looks phenomenal.

October 3, 2011

day 3.288

so this happened...
#ondisplay

October 2, 2011

day 3.287

what i love (this week)

the song
this mash-up is insane- katy perry, robyn, whitney houston, ke$ha ... the list goes on. enjoy the eargasm.

the show
add suburgatory to my favorite new fall comedies list, including new girl, 2 broke girls and up all night. it's like they found the tv movie version of emma stone to star in this mean girls-meets-juno series.

the look

this couple is ridiculous. and she writes a food blog. a model who eats.

October 1, 2011

day 3.286

melissa mccarthy does snl
heres' the best of the sketch comedy staple's latest- there's a hidden valley ranch party in my mouth!

September 30, 2011

day 3.285

leann rimes wants "someone like you," too
she might be a homewrecker. she might have let tabloid tales overtake her career. but- girl can still sing. check out former country cutie leann rimes' take on adele's "someone like you" (above). too bad she has to perform it at state fairs and other less-than-stellar outlets.

September 29, 2011

day 3.284

the x factor: better than bieber
my favorite performance from this week's show.

adele wants "someone like you"
the current diva of soul pop premiered her latest video for new single "someone like you." adele, in paris. what's not to like?

September 28, 2011

day 3.283

the song

go listen to demi lovato's "unbroken." now.

the show

the ladies of wisteria lane are back tonight. sadly, it's the last time i'll ever be able to say that.

the movie
this is on dvd now. you have no excuses if you haven't seen it. none.

the look
damn.

September 24, 2011

day 3.279

if you're not watching molls' five favorite things...

September 20, 2011

day 3.275

she might be better than the real thing
comedian amy phillips gained notice when she starred as rachel zoe- alongside rachel zoe- in this parody. now the youtube star is taking on another bravolebrity, ramona singer. and she does it brilliantly. check out the hilarious viral video, in which amy-as-ramona addresses the unexpected cast changes at the real housewives of new york- above.

September 19, 2011

day 3.274

emmy recap 2011
the winners, the upsets and the most talked about moments- well, my most talked about moments.

jane lynch brought it as host of this year's awards. while i don't think she out-hosted jimmy fallon, she definitely held her own- especially in the opening montage.

another comedic highlight? the lonely island's performance medley. freak william macy, anyone?

now a break down of the awards:

  • outstanding comedy series - modern family'
  • outstanding drama series - mad men
  • outstanding lead actress, miniseries/movie - kate winsley, mildred pierce -she's one award away from an egot- the tony. so, for now, she's just got an ego
  • outstanding lead actor, drama - kyle chandler, friday night lights - the show finally gone some recognition from the academy, a nice send-off for the series' final season
  • outstanding lead actress, drama - julianna marguiles, the good wife - yawn.
  • outstanding supporting actor, drama - peter dinklage, game of thrones - yay little people!
  • outstanding supporting actress, drama - margo martindale, justified - i never knew her name until now, so go margo!
  • outstanding lead actress, comedy - melissa mccarthy, bridesmaids- i mean mike and molly
now's a good time to bring up my favorite moment of the night- the introductions for the best comedy actress nominees. in 2009, amy poehler planned the glasses bit. this year? they went above and beyond with a full-on pageant.

  • outstanding lead actor, comedy - jim parsons, the big bang theory - yay, sheldon! and this proves the emmys aren't rigged, because steve carrel didn't get a pity statue for his final season of the office
  • outstanding supporting actor, comedy - ty burrell, modern family - yay!
  • outstanding supporting actress, comedy - julie bowen, modern family - and so conclude the 2011 modern family awards
for a full list of winners- including all those random awards you don't really care about- click here.

September 18, 2011

day 3.273

what i love (this week)

the song

perfect summer-into-fall transition party music.

the show

if you missed the premiere of this, i'm sorry, because it was phenomenal.

the movie

i bought this for $5 at target. so should you.

the look
just. the. best. check back tomorrow for a full emmy recap- in the meantime, follow my live tweets @bricesander.

September 17, 2011

day 3.272

movie review: i don't know how she does it
i don't know how she does it, either. and by "it" i mean play the exact same character in every movie she's in. sarah jessica parker channels carrie bradshaw: motherhood edition in this cutesy adaptation of the novel of the same name. i don't know how she does it follows kate (sjp), a high powered banking exec in boston whose life gets a little complicated when she lands a big account in new york. cue "i don't know how to parent, be a wife and work with pierce brosnan" montage. the flick entertains, featuring a stellar cast including greg kinnear, christina hendricks, seth meyers and a surprisingly likable olivia munn. there are plenty of laughs to be had during the hour and a half run time- but i don't know how she does it's biggest downfall is that it's not memorable. cliche after predictable cliche won't have you coming back for a second viewing. but, if you're looking for a nice escape, feel free to check out sjp in action.

September 16, 2011

day 3.271

they're back
the cw's released the trailer for the latest season of gossip girl. looks like the cast's ready to bring it- from coast to coast. i mean, they've got elizabeth hurley! check out the season 5 shenanigans above.

September 15, 2011

day 3.270

bye, bye jill and kkb
the fifth season of bravo's the real housewives of new york will look a little- ok, a lot- different. four of the seven cast members won't be back- including original wives jill zarin and alex mccord. they're joined by crazy lady kelly killoren bensimon and most recent addition cindy barshop. ramona singer, sonja morgan and luann "the countess" de lesseps will all be back- and expect some new ladies to join them. i'm not that distraught over this- the last two seasons have been overly drama filled, all brought on my miss zarin. i'm guessing bravo will keep the three ladies pictured above on the net in some capacity though- i can see alex and her husband simon doing some weird show with their kids, and kelly joining the judging panel on whatever design competition bravo attempts to launch next. and as for jill? former cast matebethenny frankel's said the upcoming third season of her show, now titled bethenny takes la, will most likely be her last, as she plans to launch a talk show (produced by ellen degeneres). taking jill off rhony will give audiences some time to forget how much of a villain she's been, just in time to launch a new docuseries about the ever-expanding zarin fabrics brand.

September 14, 2011

day 3.269

gleeking out
they're almost back! next week the kids of mckinley high return- here's a sneak peek of season 3, with plenty of brittany, santana and rachel to hold you over until next tuesday. they got the beat.

September 13, 2011

day 3.268

madonna, crazy person
she's always had the diva rap and now she's confirmed it. after a fan handed her a bouquet of hydrangeas, madonna thanked him through gritted teeth, then threw the flowers on the floor. check out the whole incident caught on tape (above)- lady m even turns to someone to say, "i absolutely loathe hydrangeas."

madge did reprieve herself- well, somewhat. the lady also known as esther recorded this (below) viral video poking fun at the incident, but it only confirms her diva-tude. still funny.

September 12, 2011

day 3.267

ashton kutcher, serial killer
ashton kutcher has never looked creepier than in this new clip from two and a half men. the former 70s show heart-throb replaces charlie sheen next monday on the his cbs series, but this new title sequence is just, well, strange.

September 11, 2011

September 10, 2011

day 3.265

what i love (this week)

September 8, 2011

day 3.263

they found jtt!
so, entertainment weekly is reuniting famous tv casts for an upcoming issue. while they were trying to keep it a secret, home improvement star patricia richardson just to happened to tweet a pic of her and the cast on set. and look! jonathan taylor thomas finally resurfaces. and, guess what? today's his 30th birthday! ew's since asked richardson to remove the pic, but there it is (above) in all its glory. i love reunion issues- can't wait to see who else they get back together.

September 7, 2011

day 3.262

the latest from newsy (well, me at newsy)
i anchored these with a sinus infection, so...

September 6, 2011

day 3.261

this. looks. phenomenal.
diablo cody and jason reitman are back together and i can. not. wait. the duo behind juno reunite for young adult, a flick about a 30-something young adult author- charlize theron, in a possibly comedic turn- who can't seem to grow up. when she decides her life isn't headed where she want it, she hightails to her hometown to reunite with an ex-boyfriend. too bad he's married with kids now- but that's not going to stop her. just the poster's out now, but can you imagine what amazingness this trailer will bring?
