the hunger games casting update - really? really?
so this happened. yeah. after the surprising news that winter's bone's jennifer lawrence would tackle the role of katniss everdeen, lionsgate revealed today that josh hutcherson and liam hemsworth would take on the two male leads in the hunger games film trilogy. the casting is iffy on its own, but when i learned which roles the two landed, i was ... well, shocked. if anything, i would have pegged liam for the role of peeta, the blonde baker's son who proves to be an ally, enemy and love interest to katniss; and josh could've have been gale, katniss' best friend, a rugged hunter with almost grecian features. too bad the two will be playing the opposite roles. after less-than-stellar fan feedback flooded the blogosphere, i would've thought the studio would go the smart route and try to nab the two actors fans were campaigning for - weeds' hunter parrish for peeta, and the chronicles of narnia's ben barnes for gale. plus- while they're only a couple years apart in age, it will look more like lawrence is babysitting hutcherson, rather than developing romantic feelings. hopefully hutcherson's acting chops, which he proved he had in last year's the kids are all right, make up for the sure-to-be awkward scenes between the duo. i'm sure hutcherson and hemsworth (sounds like a law firm) will do the roles justice, but i can't help but think what could've been. and there better be a big hair and make-up budget, as all three leads have to dye their hair to match their character descriptions.
