day 2.44

10 things i don't want to see in 2010
here are some rumors (or actual events) that have come about recently that i'd like to not happen in the new year.
  1. a kate gosselin reality show - totally unnecessary. i don't want to see a soccer mom mullet picking guys. unless it's on a conveyer belt (abc has a new show called conveyer belt of love). i'm fine with kate on tv in another capacity, though it looks like her proposed talk show with paula deen is going to move on without the mom of eight - she's been dropped from any episodes past the pilot.
  2. jon gosselin on tv - period.
  3. britney spears as a brunette - the pop star recently died her weave black. that means trouble. the last time she was this dark, she went to the hospital for a psychiatric hold. luckily, her dad's conservatorship over her has been extended into the new year. now go record some new music (and stop turning down songs penned by lady gaga).
  4. the tyra show go off the air - even though it's inevitable, how is tyra going to force herself onto the american public? come on, wendy williams can't fill all 30 minutes of the soup!
  5. the jonas brothers break up - mainly because i'd rather they keep making music together and fade off into pop culture oblivious then attempt to make 3 separate solo records. please be the next hanson. please.
  6. celebs dying - while old people are bound to cross over, let's avoid losing the young ones like brittany murphy and even michael jackson. i'd rather see more come backs in 2010.
  7. shows get canceled - there are so many good new shows this season, that i know at least one or two will bite the dust to make room for some new concepts that are sure to be flops. i still miss pushing daisies and samantha who? please, fox, don't kill glee. don't do it. i'd much rather see american idol retire to the tv graveyard. there hasn't been a watchable winner since carrie underwood, right?
  8. a new paris hilton movie or cd - while i know she's probably working on them, reality shows are her only entertaining outlets. the simple life and my new bff are good. the hottie and the nottie is not. really i'd be ok with her going away with flavor flave, tila tequila and every other std factory mtv and vh1 have found in the past decade.
  9. see ryan seacrest host another show - come on. leave a job for me in 2.5 years, will ya?
  10. say goodbye to nbc - unless the peacock net picks up their programming, this is a strong possibility. the network is in 4th place and not going anywhere with jay leno on every night at 10. please get some quality programming back! i miss friends and will and grace. give up on the single camera, grainy sitcom format and return to the multicamera style (hey, it's cheaper!) and don't tell me the sitcom is dead - cbs rules mondays and abc wednesdays with their comedy line-ups.
what are your don'ts for the new year?

day 2.42

2009: the music (in 5 minutes or less)
every year, someone mashes up some of the biggest songs as a farewell to the year that was. this year, dj earworm took it one step further. putting together the top 25 songs of 2009 in a 5 minute mashup, earworm pretty much summed up the final year of the decade. featuring the black eyed peas, lady gaga, taylor swift, jay sean and miley cyrus to name a few, "blame it on the pop" is radio worthy on its own. little did i know that the word "down" was so popular in '09. check out the mega mix above and relive the time you've spent listening to the radio and playing on itunes before 2010 makes its arrival.

day 2.41

ttyl tyra
tyra banks really is trying to be the next oprah. the former model announced today that, like winfey, this would be the last year of her eponymous talk show. the thing i don't think tyra understands is that, to be the next oprah, you can't just copy her step-by-step. tyra's show will end its run this may after 5 years. oprah is ending her show in 2011 after 25. that's a bit of a discrepancy, tyra. banks is reportedly stepping away from her emmy award-winning program to begin work on bankable studios, a new film company the star has apparently been very eager to begin. tyra cites tyler perry's films (like the "madea" series) as inspiration for the female empowerment flicks she intends to make. my only question is, why can't tyra do both her talk show and run a production company? i mean, oprah is doing it. it seems rather fishy that banks would leave the airways the same year oprah announces she'll be leaving a gaping hole in the world of daytime. my guess is that banks may have struck a deal with oprah's new oprah winfrey network. the fact that she cites perry, one of oprah's bffs, as an inspiration only adds more fuel to the fire. but, don't worry. even if tyra isn't set to pop up on own, she will still be popping up on your tv screens as she sees no end to america's next top model anytime soon. i would have pulled the plug on that show before the talk show. i understand going out on top, but why with just a 5 year blip on the tv landscape?

December 26, 2009

day 2.39

it's complicated, but not really
let's face it. i'm a sucker for comedies geared at the 50+ set. maybe it's because i'm really a retiree trapped in the body of a 19 year old. hollywood's latest offering for the over-the-hill set, it's complicated, filled my appetite for the genre. following the affair of a divorced couple, the movie is pretty much a non-stop laugh fest with heart. meryl streep, alec baldwin and steve martin all give quality performances, but the scene steeler is the office's john krasinski as meryl and alec's daughter's fiance. i don't know how much - if any - of his lines were adlibbed, but they come off effortlessly and hilariously. like most other nancy meyers flicks (i.e. the parent trap, what women want, something's gotta give and the holiday), it's complicated has something for everyone - so don't be fooled into thinking it's an old folks romcom. i expected the movie to have a few uncomfortable old people sex scenes, but all that was just alluded to (minus one alec baldwin semi-nude scene). if it's complicated pulls in a good showing at the box office (which i'm sure it will), meyers is set to pass nora ephron (when harry met sally, you've got mail, julie and julia) as the highest grossing female filmmaker ever. you go girl (shut up). the movie just opened yesterday, so there's plenty of time to check it out before it heads into that 3 month limbo between theater and dvd. hopefully, by that point, they will have greenlit a sequel. might i suggest it's still complicated as a title, nancy?

December 25, 2009

day 2.38

merry christmas!

December 24, 2009

day 2.37

gear up for the next holiday
taylor swift is an actress. well, maybe. we won't find out if she can actually act until february when the star-studded love actually-esque valentine's day hits theaters. but, in the meantime, check out the trailer (i know, i know so many trailers ... but there really hasn't been anything else to talk about) for the movie above. the cast also features taylor lautner (it's where taylor-squared met), julia roberts, bradley cooper, emma roberts, shirley mclaine, ashton kutcher, jessica beal, jennifer garner ... a whole lot of people. it looks like it should be good - and will most likely be a box office hit - but it could also be one confusing mess as it is a movie with interlocking storylines and not just one story.

merry christmas eve.

December 23, 2009

day 2.36

they're back
as a little christmas present to the world, the first trailer for the sex and the city sequel has hit the internets. while no plot details are given away, it doesn't look like the flick will disappoint. check it out above.

after the holidays the blogging will pick up from being more than just movie trailers. i promise.

December 22, 2009

day 2.35

jennifer lopez is back...
at least at the movies. while the singer's latest attempt at music, the single "loubitons," hasn't taken off, her film career might put her back on top. her first major film since 2005's monster-in-law, the back up plan follows a single woman who hears her biological clock tick-ticking away with no sign of love in her near future. but, as soon as lopez's character gets artificially inseminated, her world turns upside down as she finally meets mr. right. check out the trailer above and the film in theaters this april.

December 21, 2009

day 2.34

evolution
because it's the holidays, i'm only posting short blog posts this week. check out the latest from funny or die in which alyssa milano not only spoofs the dove "evolution of beauty" commercial, but everyone's latest guilty pleasure, jersey shore, which the actress has publicly denounced.

in other news, american idol carrie underwood announced her engagement to hockey start mike fisher today.

day 2.30

more nominations
yet another award show has released its list of nominees. the sag awards - set to take place on january 23rd and be broadcast on tnt - is one of the most revered awards within the industry as it is the nominees' peers who pick who wins what. but, not too much attention is paid to the actual show as it isn't aired on a big network. the thing i like about the sags is that they honor the entire cast and not just a single supporting actor. this way everyone gets a shot at glory. the only thing that's a little annoying is that they don't separate the comedy and drama awards in the film categories. i feel like it's almost easier to compare tv performances across the board than it is movie roles. the hard part is figuring out what the hell is a comedy anymore. anyway, here's the list of the bigger categories and who i think will take the statues.

outstanding performance by a male actor in a leading role
  • jeff bridges, crazy heart
  • george clooney, up in the air* the whole cast didn't nab a nom, but clooney will take the award home
  • colin firth, a single man
  • morgan freeman, invictus
  • jeremy renner, the hurt locker (who?)
outstanding performance by a female actor in a leading role
  • sandra bullock, the blind side* sandy will take this one, but gabourey and the precious team is bound to get the ensemble award
  • helen mirren, the last station
  • carey mulligan, an education
  • gabourey sidibe, precious
  • meryl streep, julie and julia
outstanding performance by a male actor in a supporting role
  • matt damon, invictus
  • woody harrelson, the messenger
  • christopher plummer, the last station
  • stanley tucci, the lovely bones* while the flick hasn't even hit major theaters, tucci's transformation is said to be super eery
  • christoph waltz, inglorious basterds
outstanding performance by a female actor in a supporting role
  • penelope cruz, nine
  • vera farmiga, up in the air
  • anna kendrick, up in the air
  • diane kruger, inglorious basterds
  • monique, precious * her transformation from comedian into serious actress is almost a lock for the role, though kendrick might steal this one
outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture
  • an education
  • the hurt locker
  • inglorious basterds
  • nine
  • precious* someone has to reward mariah for surviving glitter
outstanding performance by a male actor in a drama series

  • jon hamm, mad men
  • hugh laurie, house* tried and true
outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series

  • mariska hargitay, law and order: svu
  • holly hunter, saving grace
  • julianna margulies, the good wife
  • kyra sedgwick, the closer
outstanding performance by a male actor in a comedy series
  • alec baldwin, 30 rock* critics darling and a movie star who took to tv
  • steve carrel, the office
  • larry david, curb your enthusiasm
  • tony shaloub, monk
  • charlie sheen, two and a half men
outstanding performance by a female actor in a comedy series
  • christina applegate, samantha who?
  • toni collette, united states of tara
  • edie falco, nurse jackie* by far the hardest category to choose, falco's jackie is the best character on this list. though i'd love to see applegate grab the award as a big f-u to abc for canceling her show in favor of kelsey grammar's stinker hank
  • tina fey, 30 rock
  • julia louis-dreyfus, the new adventures of old christine
outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series
  • the closer
  • dexter
  • the good wife
  • mad men
  • true blood* with (surprisingly) no other noms, this cast deserves some credit for making people interested in hbo since satc and the sopranos went off the air
outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy series
  • 30 rock
  • curb your enthusiasm
  • glee* well-deserved, but a long shot
  • modern family
  • the office

December 16, 2009

day 2.29

taylor swift to become superhero?
rumors are circulating that miss swift is the number one pick for a reboot of the supergirl franchise. the star - chosen because of her role model status in the real world - is really the only name being tossed around for a possible movie (and tv show) in development for next year. one problem: it's not like swift has proven herself as an actress. she had a one-time gig on csi that was so-so, brought a little bit of cheer to snl this season and is set to make her big screen debut in february's ensemble flick valentine's day. chances are no contracts would be signed until after valentine's day's box office numbers and a review of swift's performance come in, but i still don't know about this. for one, is anyone even interested in this franchise? the '80s movie version pretty much tanked and it's not like superman is all that popular these days (the cw's smallville has always been a hard sell and the attempted relaunch of the film franchise came and went without much notice a few years ago). just because she has the hair doesn't mean she can pull off the tights. or a big movie. basically, i'd prefer is swifty just stuck to that whole singing thing.

December 15, 2009

day 2.28

the globes are coming
the golden globes are always my favorite awards show. they honor both tv and movies, both dramas and comedies making them a one-stop show. the only problem i have with this year's show is that there's a host, ricky gervais. the globes haven't been hosted in over 10 years and that's usually another thing that makes them more enjoyable. without a host, the show moves along faster and we actually focus on the awards, not the gimmicks. i really don't like gervais' comedy, either, so this year's show should be interesting. this morning the nominees were announced for the 2010 show and, well, they pretty much made up for the whole gervais thing. below's a list of the nominees and who i think will win.

day 2.24

television scoopage
there's nothing i really want to talk about today so... lets discuss tv! first off, we must say eulogies for two fallen talk shows: the bonnie hunt show and it's on with alexa chung, both ending after their current seasons. bonnie hunt really is a loss. alexa chung? not so much. i never got her; she was a british whasian who talked down to everyone. and definitely was not a replacement for my beloved trl (rest in peace). but bonnie? why, bonnie, why? in the ongoing comedienne-turned-talk show host tradition, bonnie was somewhere in between rosie and ellen, but never found a consistent audience. i'm going to miss her "ask alice" segment with her mom (though that wasn't going to last all that long anyway because of nature) and her constant real housewives of atlanta skits, like the one above. hopefully someone will save bonnie. or at least give her another sitcom. just not another cheaper by the dozen. please. ok, now for the more usual spoiler fare ... it looks like there are going to some relationship issues when grey's anatomy returns in january. little grey and mcsteamy (aka lexie and mark) are probably headed for splitsville, as mark is set to reteam with addison when she makes a cross-over appearance from private practice and lexie will get a wandering eye. should be interesting. the thing i never understand is, when the audience likes a couple together, why do they have to mess with it? just leave it alone. i get ross/rachel type things, but mark and lexie aren't the central couple ... if you watch gossip girl, you'll have to wait until march to figure out what all went down this past monday. the one thing we do (sort of) know is that chuck saw his thought-to-be dead momma standing at his dad's grave. she'll reportedly reveal herself as momma bass when the show returns, but all signs point to impostor ... we all know glee is off the air until april, but details are leaking out now that the show is back in production for the spring premiere. the biggest change when the show returns will be the characters' sports background. instead of football, puck and finn will be playing some bball. i wonder if quinn will start a renegade preggo cheer squad for basketball games? there's also a rumor that there will be a little american idol crossover, with adam lambert stopping by. no word on whether he'll play himself or not ... both the hills and the city have been renewed for yet another season. hello, mtv? 2005 called and it wants you to cancel those shows. both series saw a major decline in ratings (especially the hills, which was pulling in less than half of its former ratings thanks to lauren conrad's replacement by kristin cavallari). i didn't watch either of the shows this season and probably won't watch them when they come back, unless lauren stops by. the biggest surprise here is that audrina will be back, even though production for her own spin-off was supposed to be underway in the new year ... and that's all folks!

December 10, 2009

day 2.23

carrie on
the first official poster for the sex and the city sequel has been released and, well... what the eff? it looks like they're trying to advertise a sci fi movie. i understand that what they were probably going for was diamonds, glitz and glam, but it comes off looking like carrie on a spaceship. the reflective sunglasses add to the "i'm going to fly to saturn" look. the movie isn't due out until may, but i'm sure press will start for it very soon. reportedly, this movie is lighter than the first big screen outing, focusing on the comedy of everyday married and family life instead of midlife crises. should be funny. and interesting, as stars like penelope cruz and miley cyrus have filmed cameos.

day 2.22

glee goes bye-bye
so, my new favorite show, glee, is over for now. it will be back in april in order to make room for 64 hours a week of american idol on fox's schedule. obviously i don't agree with the network's removal of the show, but i understand it. idol is a rating's juggernaut and it needs its room. but wouldn't glee make the perfect counterpart to the show? hello! they're both about music. duh. anyway, on a day of no more glee, we get some glee news. rumor has it that broadway star idina menzel is in negotiations to take a role on the show. known for her work in rent and wicked, there has been a musical geekdom call out for miss broadway to join the show in some capacity. while that call has mainly focused on idina playing rachel berry's (lea michele) biological mom, it doesn't look like that'll be the case. maybe. idina is reportedly in the running to play the director of "vocal adrenaline," the main competition for mckinley high's "new directions." idina would be joining lea's costar from spring awakening, jonathan groff, who will be playing the lead singer of "vocal adrenaline." it looks like tv is starting to look a lot more like broadway. the cast of glee just went back into production after hiatus to start work on the spring episodes. if idina's not going to play bio-mom to rachel, then this is kind of a let down. but with the show's quirk, i can see her being both choir director and bio-mom. the actresss share more than a theater background. they have nearly identical faces. what a twist that would be. i guess we should see rachel's two dad's in the flesh (we've seen photos) first, though. that's a moment i can't wait to see.

December 8, 2009

day 2.21

busy day
...briceland. no blog today.

December 7, 2009

day 2.20

gaga mania
so, today, i spent a lot of time on youtube. like an exorbitant amount. a lot of that time was spent on lady gaga videos. the first one i found was a medley performed by sam tsui, who i talked about earlier when i posted the "college musical" videos. sam, and his creative partner kurt hugo schneider, have blown up on youtube since posting a michael jackson medley. here's their gaga vid. it mashes up "pokerface," "just dance," "bad romance" and "lovegame."

gaga also performed on uk's "the x factor" over the weekend, dressed like some weird cyborg batgirl. she performed "bad romance" and appeared to be soaking in the experience, asking the audience to sing with her multiple times.

and, finally, lady gaga has released a christmas single, "christmas tree." needless to say, gaga is the only person who could sexualize the birth of christ.

December 6, 2009

day 2.19

a gossip girl goes snl
blake lively got the chance to host saturday night live last night and she was able to bring some funnies. lively's episode was definitely one of the high points this season, but not the funniest episode in the show's history. the opening sequence - which didn't even feature serena from gg - was the part that made me laugh the hardest, a send-up of the white house party crashers.

lively got to help bring back one of my favorite snl characters, virginiaca, the black woman with a white daughter who goes shopping.

musical rihanna got in on the fun, doing none of andy samberg's digital shorts.

and no snl would be complete without a celeb send-up, this time of brittany murphy. abby elliot is turning out to be one of the show's key players, mastering a lot of celeb impressions. too bad they don't use her more often.

lively's breakthrough sketch was a tiger woods send-up, in which she got to play swedish wife elin.

day 2.18

sorry
nada hoy.

December 4, 2009

day 2.17

miley's one step closer to ll
disney might have another lindsay lohan on their hands. people have been speculating that it was only a matter of time before miley cyrus joined the pack of former-child star wild childs. on a recent vacation, miley revealed a new tattoo just under her left breast, seemingly reading "just breathe." the starlet just turned 17 and, therefore, needed parental consent for the tat. but, with billy ray's finances heavily related to miley's, i imagine it was pretty easy to get daddy cyrus to ink his name on the permission slip. miley's camp said "no comment" when a couple of news sources asked if the tat was real, making it pretty clear that miley is inked. what will be her next step away from her squeaky clean image? we can only imagine.

December 3, 2009

day 2.16

jonas administration takes office
the official first single from nick jonas's solo project, nick jonas and the administration, has hit the internets and, well... how is it any different that jobro music? like rob thomas/matchbox 20 and beyonce/destiny's child, nick's solo project sounds exactly like the music he makes with his band. titled "who i am," the lead single is filled with nick's squealing vocals and plenty of "i'll pretend i'm hardcore" guitar riffs. while the song is catchy, i see no reason for nick to record it on his own. shouldn't joe be making weird christina aguilera-like vocal gymnastic songs in the background? the only reason i see for nick branching out is to guarantee himself life post-jobros. kevin is getting married soon and will have to stop pretending to be a chaste teenager. joe doesn't play any instruments. basically, nick is both the only viable solo prospect. but, this could all turn into another hanson, which i suspect it will. the tweens may love you now, but they won't love you forever.

December 2, 2009

day 2.15

grammy schmammys
it looks like beyonce will be queen of the 52nd annual grammy awards when they air january 31st on cbs. lady b landed 10 noms, the most of any performer this year. taylor swift made a strong effort to beat bey, but only got 8 nods. below is a list of the nominees for the bigger categories and who i think will win (marked with an *).

  • "use somebody," kings of leon
  • "poker face," lady gaga

day 2.14

the nicole richie show?
it looks like abc has found their next star: nicole richie. yep, the former simple life-er has landed a deal with the alphabet net to produce and star in a half-hour, single camera comedy. the star posted the news on her official blog yesterday and the internets went crazy. the show, which is as of yet untitled, will revolve around a character richie developed herself: a young woman balancing the professional and personal worlds. hmm ... isn't that the background of every female-driven sitcom? richie was reportedly inspired by all the women she's come in contact with in the past couple of years. richie writes:
"it amazes me to watch and observe how many different ideas there are about what a woman's role should be in this era. i've taken these fascinating ideas, and compiled them into something that i think will be very special (and funny!)."
the good news is that abc looks to be extremely passionate about this project and have compiled some pretty heavy hitters to help assemble the pilot episode. daisy gardner, a writer for tina fey's 30 rock, will pen the first episode's script while warren bell and jamie tarses will executive produce. the duo is no stranger to the alphabet net, with bell having served as show-runner for the long running according to jim and tarses having been in charge of the network for a period in the 90s. the show is still in its beginning stages, but will probably go into production in the next couple of weeks to be in contention for spring pilot season. if the net likes the show, then they'll pick it up for fall 2010. richie isn't known for being an actress, but has made several one-off guest appearances on shows like chuck, eve and 8 simple rules. i hope this show gets picked up just so we can all see it. if the show lands a spot on the fall schedule, then richie will be one busy woman. she's a mom to two, a fashion and jewelry designer and an author. quite the resume for a girl know just as "paris hilton's bff" less than a decade ago.

day 2.13

it must be a trend...
because everyone seems to be falling on their ass while performing. lady gaga is the latest star to join the club, falling during some not-that-difficul choreography at her concert this weekend in montreal. fast-forward to the 20 second mark in the video above to see the stumble. the other cool thing to do, apparently, is to integrate the fall into your dance number.

hopefully, there will be more to talk about tomorrow. in the meantime, kill brain-cells with this online faux-reality show. it's hilarious.

day 2.12

did they or didn't they?
reports circulated this morning that hollywood's current golden couple, reese witherspoon and jake gyllenhaal, have split. but, don't break out the condolence cards yet. while people magazine - usually the most reliable source for celeb news - reported it, jake and reese's reps both were quick to report that the news simply isn't true. the biggest reason not to believe the people story is because the news comes from a source "close to" reese. that usually means "i don't know this person." but, the news could still be true. a lot of hollywood-ites like to keep break-ups as private as possible and delay the news in order to avoid questions. especially when they have projects to promote. jake is soon to embark on a publicity run for his movie prince of persia: the sands of time. i guess we'll just have to wait and see.

as my break wraps to a close, there's still nothing to talk about. check back tomorrow.

day 2.7

a little (early) holiday cheer for you
the cast of glee - my new favorite show - has recorded one of my favorite christmas songs, "last christmas." the song won't be performed on the show and was recorded exclusively for digital download. check it out above.

day 2.6

the american music awards
i don't ever recall really watching the american music awards. they're kind of the ugly step-cousin to the grammy's/vmas/every other music award show. but, this year, i actually sat down to catch them. the awards show stepped up their performance game this year, booking janet jackson, rihanna, carrie underwood, lady gaga, jay-z and more all to perform. if you think back a couple of years a go, the show's biggest names were lindsay lohan and hilary duff. janet jackson opened the show with a "medly" of her "greatest hits." other than being confusing and hard to understand, it was a solid performance.
A
my biggest issue with the ama's is that they're fan-voted. i never feel like the public chooses right (hello, taylor hicks) and big decisions are better left to the professionals. however, this year, i thought america got it right. the nominees weren't all that great and it seemed like the show's organizers had problems picking out what to nominate. what i really didn't understand was the amount of noms michael jackson had. i understand he died, but the man put out no new music during the nomination window (and the only "new" song since has been "this is it," which was penned in the 80s). just honor the man with a lifetime achievement award and a big, show-stopping celeb-filled performance of his greatest hits. here's a breakdown of who won what:

artist of the year: taylor swift - people seem to have a big issue with this, but why? the people chose her! even if she beat out michael jackson, why was he more deserving than her? now i agree that taylor is getting a lot of praise in a short amount of time, but she's the only artist who everyone seems to agree on. she just need not burn out too fast and evolve. you can't sing songs about high school forever. especially when you're almost 20. i'm talking to you, kevin jonas.

favorite male artist (pop/rock): michael jackson - surprise, surprise.

favorite female artist (pop/rock): taylor swift - the second of 5 awards taylor won last night. she stayed awake live via satellite from london to accept her trophies.

favorite band, duo or group (pop/rock): the black eyed peas - the beps also performed last night and, well, it seemed like they didn't realize they were on air. it was like they were just jamming out in someone's basement. and why did will.i.am decide to don a toupee?

country male artist: keith urban

country female artist: taylor swift - i understand cross over appeal, but should artists really be nominated in both categories?

favorite male artist (rap/hip hop): jay-z - mr. beyonce also performed last night with alicia keys to their mega-hit "empire state of mind."

favorite male artist (soul/r&b): michael jackson - don't even get me started...again.

favorite female artist (soul/r&b): beyonce

international artist of the year: whitney houston - miss houston also got the chance to perform on the show. needless to say, it was a bit of a mess.

last night was also the night of falls. after lady gaga performed, her set left pieces of sugar glass all over the stage. the sugary dust apparently left the performance area quite slick, leading to tumbles during jennifer lopez, alicia keys and adam lambert's performances. check them out below.

November 22, 2009

day 2.5

check back
tomorrow for a full recap of the american music awards.

November 21, 2009

day 2.4

new from j.lo
after taking some time off to start a family, jennifer lopez is back with a vengeance. the singer/actress/mogul is working on rebuilding her acting career (the pregnancy themed comedy the back-up plan is set for release in april) and has made a big effort to get back on the music charts. first, there was the "who's lola?" campaign to support first single "fresh out the oven." the video for that song has just been released with lopez dressed as newly created alter ego lola.

the video is a little a.d.d., jumping from shot to shot, but well done nonetheless. we saw most of the footage in the original teaser video for the song.

"fresh out the oven" is the lead single off j.lo's new album (most likely being released around the time of the back-up plan), but she's already released a second song, "louboutins." check it out below.

November 20, 2009

day 2.3

if you like lady gaga
...then you'll love stefani germanotta. that's because they're the same person. before she was costumed out the wahzoo and people were questioning her gender, lady gaga was a little new yorker named stegani germanotta. two new videos of the star's early days have hit the interwebs and they're a little more norah jones, a little less electro pop. check them out below.

check back later - i hope to post video of oprah's tearful announcement that she's ending her show after next season.

update: here's oprah's tearful announcement.

word is circulating that oprah won't move that current show to the oprah winfrey network, but will relaunch her brand with a smaller, different format in los angeles when own launches.

November 19, 2009

day 2.2

the big o
it looks like the golden era of daytime tv may finally be coming to a close. nbc is reporting that oprah winfrey has decided to end her long-running daytime talker at the end of next season. oprah is set to make the announcement this friday as part of her "oprah friday's live in chicago" episode. the final new episode of the oprah winfrey show will air september 9, 2011. this news comes after much speculation of what oprah would do once her network partnership with discovery networks, the oprah winfrey network (own), launches early 2011. the network is taking over the channel slot currently home to discovery health and will feature programing that lady o is passionate about, with show regulars lisa ling and peter walsh getting their own shows. there is also talk that re-runs of oprah's talk show, which will have been on the air for 25 seasons when it ends its run, will be a regular part of the schedule. while not many details are known about oprah's decision to end her run, we can speculate. oprah's ratings have steadily declined as newcomers like ellen degeneres, tyra banks and even protege rachael ray have landed their own spots in daytime. in addition, the oprah show is one of the most expensive programs for networks to purchase. news recently broke that many channels were choosing to not renew their contract with the show for next year when it's price went up. i'm guessing that some of them will now reconsider. oprah has also diversified her harpo brand, having been responsible for the dr. phil and dr. oz shows in addition to rachael ray's. design expert nate berkus is also in pre-production for his own daytime talker.

a rumor currently circulating is that, while oprah is ending the show as we know it, she will still be a fixture on our tv's. oprah may be relaunching the show on own, taking it out of syndication. the show would also move to either los angeles or new york, where own will have headquarters. either way, she'll have enough money to last her - and then some - for forever.

November 18, 2009

day 2.1

miley: beyond disney
yesterday, access hollywood premiered the trailer for miley cyrus's first movie outside the disney name, nicholas sparks' the last song. while the movie was made under one of disney's brands (touchstone), it's definitely the most adult work miley has done. apparently, she wanted her own a walk to remember, mandy moore's breakout acting role, which led to nicholas sparks writing the book and the subsequent adaptation. miley got the chance to name her character and chose "ronnie," after her grandpa ron. sparks made ronnie short for veronica to make the name not such a bizarre. while the trailer features miley singing "i look at you," the closing credits song for the film, her character doesn't sing at all in the movie. instead, ronnie is a piano prodigy. check out the clip above and the movie in theaters this april.

people's sexiest man

like every year around this time, people magazine crowns their "sexiest man alive." johnny depp took the title this year, the second time this decade. it was quite the shocker as many people were expecting one of the other two men featured on the cover - robert pattinson or ryan reynolds - to gain the top spot. what do you think of depp being named the sexiest man alive? usually, the man who takes the crown has a big project coming out and is at the height of his career. depp is kind of waning right now, with no projects lined up other than tim burton's alice in wonderland out next year so he seems somewhat of an odd choice.

November 17, 2009

day 365

happy birthday!
we've made it to a year! dirty laundry is officially one year old today. in celebration of the one year anniversary of dirty laundry, i'll be taking the day off. but, check out beyonce's latest offering, "video phone," featuring lady gaga below.
check back tomorrow when i'll be kicking off year 2!

November 16, 2009

day 364

are you a steve carrell and/or tina fey fan?
then you're in luck. the nbc comedy duo have teamed up to star in next spring's date night. the trailer for the film premiered online last week and features only a handful of the all star cast. in addition to mark wahlberg, mila kunis and james franco, the film also stars leighton meester, ray liotta, mark ruffalo, kristen wiig, common and taraji p. henson. really, there's not an unknown in the mix. check it out above.

November 15, 2009

day 363

get your sunday lols
get your fill of comedy for the day in this clip from jimmy kimmel. the funnyman had disgraced south caroline teen 2007 (the "in the iraq" girl) go around to different people to find out where babies come from, including octomom.

November 14, 2009

day 362

surprise, surprise
in a shocking turn of events, kate hudson can sing! kate makes her musical debut in the movie version of the broadway production nine, out christmas day. the movie also features the vocal stylings of nicole kidman, fergie and penelope cruz. those three were all featured in the original trailer for the flick, but kate wasn't. now, we get a preview. while i'm sure kate was aided in post-production, she still belts it out. check it out above.

miley cyrus is the new justin timberlake
well, at least according to timbaland. the mega producer is on the verge of releasing his second record of collaborations, shock value 2 - out december 8th. the first volume helped relaunch nelly furtado's career and make keri hilson a household name. in a surprise twist, timbaland asked miley cyrus to provide vocals for "we belong to music." after working with the disney teen queen, timbaland told entertainment weekly that she has the same "it" as jt. must be something in the mouse house water. the second installment of the shock value franchise will also feature katy perry and justin timberlake.

November 13, 2009

day 361

divas collide
when beyonce and lady gaga each caught wind that the other had written and recorded telephone-themed songs, the pop divas decided to collaborate. the duo has recorded "video phone" off of beyonce's iam...sasha fierce record and "telephone" off gaga's new the fame monster. check them both out below. i'm not sure the collaboration really adds anything, but the songs are still catchy.

November 12, 2009

day 360

off
no blog today. come back tomorrow!

November 11, 2009

day 359

more shows headed to the tv graveyard
on top of yesterday's news that abc will be axing eastwick, two more shows bit the big one today: abc's hank and fox's dollhouse. neither of the shows has been able to pick up steam or build an audience and aren't big surprises. the big surprise is that shows with so much star power didn't make it. dollhouse premiered last winter, the brainchild of buff the vampire slayer creator joss whedon and starring eliza dushku, as fox's "next big thing." well, fox plunked dollhouse on friday nights - not exactly a recipe for success. because of the show's clunker of a time slot, and losing its once strong lead-in of terminator: the sarah conner chronicles, fox is pulling the plug after this season's original 13 episode order. this makes the second fox-starring vehicle for dushku to on;y last 2 seasons. the first was tru calling. really, i just think neither dushku nor whedon are big draws - while they're big in the tv circuit and with tv junkies, they're really not all that well known. kelsey grammer's hank, on the other hand, should have worked. big star. big network. big night. hank was part of abc's wednesday comedy block, which launched standouts cougar town and modern family this year. so why didn't hank work? first, the show had production problems up until its premiere, with recasts taking place after the pilot was filmed. then hank was saddled alongside the middle, patricia heaton's abc comedy that's been doing just ok (and was picked up for a full, 22 episode season after just 2 episodes). hank is also the lead-in, meaning it's supposed to start off the hourlong block. the 8/7c timeslot is always a hard sell, with most people eating dinner during that time. add that to not-too-great reviews from critics and you have the recipe for failure. in hank's place, abc will air a series of holiday specials and reruns of modern family and cougar town. starting in january, it is expected that alyssa milano's new comedy, romantically challenged, will take over the slot. hopefully it will fare batter.

in more cancelation news, let's dance has been pulled from abc's schedule without even airing. the show was set to be hosted by kathy griffin and premiere right after dancing with the stars' finale on november 23rd. the premise of the show was to have celebrity contestants recreate famous dance routines from movies over 5 weeks, leading up to a major dance off. the show, like dwts and so many competition shows, was based off international programs. there is still some hope (with all this schedule shuffling at abc) that the show may live on midseason. abc's new hit v - about an alien invasion - will end it's first season run by then, there's the 30 minute opening from hank and the hour block opening from eastwick. and don't worry too much about miss griffin - her emmy winning reality show, bravo's my life on the d-list, was greenlit for a 6th season today.

jon gosselin continues to win people over
hi, jon? it's america. we'd like you to know that something is only funny if it's not sad. this is sad. in the spot that jon filmed for funny or die, he pokes fun at his image and dreams about going back in time to start over. basically, it's all about him poking fun at his former, squeaky clean image. well, jon, most of us would like that back. this would be better as a true story instead of a spoof. check out the not so funny clip above.

singer or filmmaker?
lady gaga doesn't do anything halfway. the modern era's madonna continues to impress me with where she's willing to go. her latest single, "bad romance," has been burning up the charts and is the lead track from her repackaged rerelease of her debut, now known as the fame monster. the package - which includes artwork, a coffee table book and a bunch of new tracks - doesn't hit stores until thanksgiving week, but you can watch the first video above. gaga doesn't make music videos, she makes mini-films - with a ton of special effects. this may be the creepiest, and best, of them yet.

in other music news, rihanna has leaked yet another new track from rated r, "hard," featuring young jeezy. out of the three songs we've gotten to hear, it's the best.

November 10, 2009

day 358

wednesdays to get ugly?
some big tv news broke today and i really couldn't be happier. abc announced today that they were picking up the back 9 for new hit the forgotten and axing freshman dramedy eastwick. eastwick will finish out its original 13-episode order and then head into the oblivion that is the tv graveyard. that means that the 10/9c slot will be wide open starting in january. abc currently has two options: either bring back lost as planned or move former top-20 staple ugly betty from its crap of a time slot on fridays. the latter is looking more likely. this season of betty has been critically awesome, but hasn't been pulling in the ratings. well, duh, abc. you put it on friday. no one watches tv on fridays. especially at 9/8c. that's like peak out-to-dinner/before stores close hours. according to e!, the network head honchos want to relaunch betty yet again to regain interest in the show and see the move to wednesday's as the perfect opportunity. plus, ugly betty's tone is much more in line with breakout freshmen shows modern family and cougar town, which air at 9/8c on wednesdays. expect official word from the network in the next week or so.

November 9, 2009

day 357

grey's adds another blonde to the mix
grey's anatomy has cast levin rambin (formerly of terminator: the sarah conner chronicles) as a recurring character that will pop up in with next week's episode, "holidaze." there's no word on just exactly who levin will play, but there are sure a lot of rumors. one storyline is that a woman from mcsteamy's (eric dane) past comes back to wreak havoc on his relationship with little grey (chyler leigh). but who is this "woman?" apparently, she's mcsteamy's long-lost daughter. wow, grey's, way to be creative. remember how you already have one character with a secret child past? hello, izzie and her 16-year-old self's adoption. however, levin may just be a new romantic rival for lexie. either way, hopefully this will make the lackluster season that is the abc powerhouse a little better.

November 8, 2009

day 356

taylor swift brings the lols
taylor swift hosted saturday night live last night and finally made the show funny again. after a great season of political humor, snl has been light on the laughs this year, barely doing any regular spots. but, with the injection of youth and charm that is t swift, the funny spark was brought back to nbc. check out the videos below in which taylor skewers ex joe jonas, name drops kanye west, takes on kate gosselin and much more.

November 7, 2009

day 355

wtf?
remember, he's not a fame seeker. just doing weird things like yoga in public.

November 6, 2009

day 354

gleek peaks!
there's not a whole lot to discuss today, but here are some clips from next week's glee, "wheels." oh how i've missed you. it looks like it will be well worth the two week wait. the episode focuses on artie (aka kid in the wheel chair) and samples the songs "defying gravity" form wicked and "dancing with myself" by the donnas, both of which are included on the glee volume 1 soundtrack that, if you haven't picked it up, you should.
