instant classic. diablo cody and jason reitman's latest collaboration, young adult, is basically what would happen if we got to see a character form a john hughes movie all grown up. charlize theron stars as mavis, a 37-year-old young adult author still living like a young adult- example: her meals consist of ben & jerrys and an episode of the kardashians. mavis treks back to her minnesota hometown in hopes of landing the one that got away, buddy (morning glory's patrick wilson). the thing is- buddy recently had a baby and that's the only reason mavis wants him back. as mavis tries to win back buddy, she's also tasked with finishing the final book in her series. her book begins to mirror the action in her real life, as both she and her character realize going home isn't alway the best thing. alcoholically stumbling through each day, mavis can't seem to get it together. a newfound friendship with former high school geek matt (patton oswalt) doesn't help either, as mavis is forced to directly face how horrible she was in high school. young adult is no light comedy- it's very dark and very real, so don't expect a pick-me-up at the movie theater. instead, expect to feel for the very real, very flawed characters cody created and walk away feeling really good about yourself. well, unless you sympathize with mavis. then expect to feel pretty bad.
vicki gunvalson has a new face...
and there's a brunette. the new season of the real housewives of orange county premieres february 7.
here's my mini-review for justin timberlake and amanda seyfried's in time: go see it. it's bonnie and clyde meets robin hood meets the matrix meets the island meets ... i don't know, just go watch it, ok?
the look
so it's not really a look, just a glee-tastic viral video worth sharing. you have to watch the whole :43 second clip. i know, tough duty. suck it up.
gabourey sidibe popped up on the wendy williams show this week, joined by a new segment: "hairpiece theater." watch as wendy and gabby recreate a scene between kim zolciak and nene leakes. wendy totally lifted this bit from bonnie hunt, but who cares?
the atlanta ladies return- check out this teaser trailer for the fourth installment of the real housewives of atlanta. new babies, new weaves and possibly new housewives look like they'll bring the drama.
comedian amy phillips gained notice when she starred as rachel zoe- alongside rachel zoe- in this parody. now the youtube star is taking on another bravolebrity, ramona singer. and she does it brilliantly. check out the hilarious viral video, in which amy-as-ramona addresses the unexpected cast changes at the real housewives of new york- above.
the fifth season ofbravo's the real housewives of new york will look a little- ok, a lot- different. four of the seven cast members won't be back- including original wives jill zarin and alex mccord. they're joined by crazy lady kelly killoren bensimon and most recent addition cindy barshop. ramona singer, sonja morgan and luann "the countess" de lesseps will all be back- and expect some new ladies to join them. i'm not that distraught over this- the last two seasons have been overly drama filled, all brought on my miss zarin. i'm guessing bravo will keep the three ladies pictured above on the net in some capacity though- i can see alex and her husband simon doing some weird show with their kids, and kelly joining the judging panel on whatever design competition bravo attempts to launch next. and as for jill? former cast matebethenny frankel's said the upcoming third season of her show, now titled bethenny takes la, will most likely be her last, as she plans to launch a talk show (produced by ellen degeneres). taking jill off rhony will give audiences some time to forget how much of a villain she's been, just in time to launch a new docuseries about the ever-expanding zarin fabrics brand.
praise jesus! real housewife of new jersey, melissa gorga, finally released her recoded-at-home debut song, "on display." it's, er, special. she sings about paparazzi chasing her because, you know, that's happened.
thank god. the richest bitches of bravo return for a second season of outrageous spending, dinner parties from hell and plenty of fighting. all six original ladies are back, joined by two new side players: eddie cibrian ex brandi glanville and entrepreneur dana wilkey. glanville brings insanity, drama and lisa's former houseguest cedric to the small screen. check out her intro video, in which she describes herself as a "full-time part-time mom," below. um, what?
if you need me september 5, you'll know where to find me. parked in front of a tv.
the hunger gamesboys make their debut
two dye jobs and lots of costuming later, i'm actually thinking liam hemsworth and josh hutcherson might actually pull this thing off. you?
i don't even like this song that much, but i can't stop listening to it. i mean i've even listened to the spanish version. and watched countless covers on youtube. sorry i'm not sorry.
the show
any show in which danielle staub yells at any person, animal or thing is worth watching.
the movie
who knew abc family was in the lifetime movie-making business? the family friendly net sporadically puts out tv movies, including its latest effort, cyberbully. the emily osment-starring film is laughably overdramatic and predictable- just the kind of guilty pleasure tv movie everybody needs.
the look
kristen stewart, who? relativity media released the first image of lily collins as snow white in the company's as-yet-untitled fantasy project. collins will go head-to-head with kristen stewart, who's set to headline another big screen adaptation. but, by the looks of this pic, i'm definitely seeing the lily collins version.
let's just say i'm going to need some serious table flipping to make up for the big blonde void in the new season of the real housewives of new jersey. bravo premiered the trailer for the new season of the (arguably) trashiest franchise in the series. the one plus? villianess danielle staub is no more. but, don't worry, it looks like bravo's bringing the drama. replacing dina and danielle are two of teresa giudice's family members - cousin kathy (who shares the miniature forehead) and sister-in-law melissa, and neither lady seems to like teresa. newly svelte caroline still seems to be running the show, and jacquelline still seems to be the wet blanket. at least they're brining in her ex for some drama? check out the trailer above and get ready for may 16th when the bridge and tunnel crowd returns to our tvs.
i think christina aguilera's bionic is one of the most overlooked albums of the last year. maybe it was the lead single? maybe it was the marketing? i don't know why this album tanked, but i really think everyone should give it another listen. "bionic" is one of the most get-stuck-in-your-head worthy songs, well, ever.
the movie
i'm kind of cheating here. technically, this is a miniseries. but it came from netflix, so it counts. right? i read this book (joyce carol oates' blonde) over the summer - all 738 pages (in, like, size 9 font!) - so i was very interested in seeing how someone adapted something so massive and intricate into a movie. fyi, blonde's a fictional take on the rise and fall of marilyn monroe. while it's not perfect, it's keeping me entertained (i still have another disc to watch). a big screen version is being planned for next year, with naomi watts in the role of marilyn. now that should be interesting.
one of my favorite network's - bravo - make a big announcement today: it's adding 11 new shows to its lineup. yes, e-lev-en! in addition to renewing the real housewives of beverly hills (yay, more giggy!), real housewives of atlanta (yay, more music by kim zolciak!), tabitha's salon takeover (yay, more bitchiness!), bethenny ever after (yay, more bitchiness by bethenny!) and top chef: just desserts (um, yeah), the network is launching new shows with some old faces - here's a breakdown.
interior therapy with jeff lewis - this is the show i'm most excited for, expect for the fact that it might mean flipping out is dunzo. obsessive-compulsive house flipper jeff lewis will be moving in with design-challenged homeowners, making over their homes during his stay. along for the ride is lewis's partner in crime, jenni pulos, as well as his maid, zoila (dying).
it's a brad brad world - former rachel zoe associate brad goreski gets his own show! cameras will follow zoe's protege as he navigates launching his own styling business. should be similar in format and tone to the rachel zoe project, whose future currently sits in limbo :(
the therapists - it's a show about, well, therapists. crews will follow some of la-la-land's top shrinks, so hopefully we'll get a chance to peak behind some celeb therapy sessions. on second thought, the therapy scenes on bethenny ever after make me want to hurt myself.
mad fashion - remember chris march from project runway? he was the guy who basically designed all his clothes for drag queens in daytime. well now we get to see what he's been up to since losing his season of bravo (formerly) signature show. apparently he has a crazy crew working alongside him, so mad fashion has potential.
million dollar listing: new york - bravo's learned that franchising works, so why not try it with another one of the net's hit shows? should be the same schtick as its california counterpart, maybe with a lady agent or two.
miss advised - with the success of millionaire matchmaker, why not help out the less financially stable? three self-proclaimed "singles relationship experts" will help women find balance in their personal and professional lives.
most eligible: dallas - while we wait for the real housewives franchise to make its way to the big d, this will have to suffice. tv line says "think the hills, but dallas." we'll get a sneak behind some of dallas' hottest clubs, restaurants and events as we follow a group of young, and single, dallas-ites. i fell like the net tried this concept (and failed) with miami social ... so we'll see how this pans out.
project soulmate - could this mean patti stanger's on her way off bravo's must list? new york matchmaker lori zaslow takes the reins on project soulmate, which sounds exactly like stanger's matchmaker.
ready to wear - it's goodwill for rich people. cameras will take us behind the scenes of some of new york's most exclusive consignment shops. you know, the places where luann de lesseps likes to throw charity events on real housewives of new york?
roble and co - celebrity restaurant drama. yawn.
tabitha takes over - bravo knows when it has a star, and it knows when to use one. tabitha will make the move from overseeing salon takeovers, to taking over small businesses and companies across the country. should be interesting to see if her salon savvy will translate.
other noticeable omissions from bravo's announcement? the real housewives of d.c., which has long been the focus of cancellation speculation. bravo has yet to make an official announcement, but i'd say we can count on not seeing the capital ladies again. and project runway wanna-been the fashion show is missing, too. now that bravo's found success in areas beyond fashion design shows, i'd say move on - top chef's the last of a dying breed (remember shear genius and top design?)
the ladies of the real housewives of new york are officially set to make their tv return april 7th - more than a month later than bravo originally announced. after being pushed aside for the premiere of the less-than-stellar real housewives of miami, bravo desperately needs the women of new york to remind viewers that the housewives franchise can actually be entertaining.yes, the real housewives of the oc are back, but that show needs a massive overhaul. the real housewives of beverly hills raised the bar for the franchise, and the women of orange county are looking more than a little out of date. while i'd miss vicki's "whoo-hoo's" and tamra's scheming a little, a whole new orange county cast - one that actually involves housewives and real drama - would be a big help. the return of rhony means three housewives series will be on at the same time (ny, oc and mia), plus a housewives spinoff - bethenny ever after. i hate to say it, but there might be too many housewives on tv.
the (reality) tv gods just keep playing with me. taunting me, to be more precise. you might remember that mtv announced late last year that lauren conrad - the girl who kept the network afloat after they abandoned the whole "music television concept" - would be returning to the net's airwaves with a brand new show about her life in the fashion industry. well guess what? that show will never see the light of day. conrad and co. filmed a pilot ep, but the footage reportedly didn't fit with the mtv "brand." it's too "high brow," which translates to "she didn't get drunk or punch anyone, so we don't think people will watch it." trust me, i completely get the appeal of jersey shore. and, sure, i indulge in the occasional snooki-centric marathon. but a person can only take watching so many drunken nights at the club fist pumping before they need something that doesn't actually kill braincells. while i highly doubt l.c.'s return to the small screen would have been emmy-worthy, i at least think the fans deserved to see it. the hills became such a caricature of the stars' everyday lives, and this would have been the chance to see what we were missing all that time. i know it seems like forever ago, but it was just a little over a year ago that conrad brought in close to 4 million viewers for the net. there's a slight chance that the pilot lauren filmed may be turned into a special for mtv, but don't get your hopes up. it might be hard to fit some real documentary-style reality tv in-between non-stop repeats of jersey shore, teen mom 2 and skins. i mean, they brought back my life as liz but passed on lauren conrad? enough said.
another show we won't be seeing anytime soon? the new season of the real housewives of new york. the bravo series won't premiere until late spring, even though the net said we could watch what happens starting in just a couple of weeks. the nyc ladies have been pushed aside to make room for some latin flavor. bravo plans to premiere the real housewives of miami in the new york cast's place. while i'm excited to follow the florida drama (check out the trailer above), i'm impatient. i need jill zarin's nasal whining, ramona's bug-eyes, countess luann's freak voice and kelly killoren bensimon's nonsense ramblings back in my life, asap.
in other real housewives news, it looks like we might get some new faces on the yet-to-be-annouced, but sure-to-happen, second season of the real housewives of beverly hills. the runaway hit of the franchise might lose not one, but two original cast members (both camille and kim are rumored to be considering exits, but i'm doubtful), so producers are reportedly scrambling to find replacements. brandi glanville - eddie cibrian's ex/the woman whose house leann rimes wrecked - is reportedly in talks to join the cast, which would bring back former lisa vanderpump flunky cedric. apparently since cedric left vanderpump manor he's been spending a lot of time at brandi's house - they're pictured together above. maybe he can be credited as "brandi's permanent houseguest" next season? also on the list of possible additions are sylvester stallone's wife jennifer flavin (could we see another hollywood marriage blow up in our faces?) and jeannie buss, an exec for the los angeles lakers (current housewife adrienne maloof owns the sacramento kings - rivalry, anyone?).
