chris brown beat her down: crybaby edition
really? it took a year and a half chris brown? really? last night, bet aired their annual award show honoring the best in r&b, rap and soul music. part of the show was a tribute to michael jackson, starring chris brown. brown danced through a medley of jackson's hits before attempting to perform "man in the mirror." unfortunately, for chris, his emotions got the best of him. chris could barely get out a sound, let alone the song's lyrics before he hunched over into the fetal position and broke down. now, there's no way to know whether or not chris was sad over the death of mj or beating rihanna. but, i think we all know. watch the great dance sequence for the first 4 minutes of the video above, then watch the most uncomfortable moment on tv (so far) this year.
cougar town say what?
after a strong, creatively driven first season, rumors are circulating (and by circulating, i mean everyone attached to this show has confirmed it) that abc's cougar town could be getting a name change come fall. well, now the show's possible names are making the rounds. according to e news, the following list is being considered for the series' second season:
- friends and family
- friends and neighbors
- the cul de sac neighborhood
- the end of the street
- the neighborhood
- jules neighborhooding
really? i'm not even sure neighborhooding is english. not one of these titles sounds like a real show. they sound like a funny-or-die sketch. obviously, someone was trying to associate the show with star courtney cox's former series friends. if they go with any of these titles, it would have to be the neighborhood. my suggestion? find a different person (i.e. not you 5-year-old kid) to come up with titles.
update: apparently, the list e! received was lost in translation. according to our nice anonymous friend in the comments, the correct list is as follows
- friends and family
- friends and neighbors
- the cul de sac
- neighborhood jules
- neighborhooding
- the end of the street
- the neighborhood
now i kind of like neighborhooding. it makes more sense when jules isn't doing it, right? what do you think of the right new names?

meet the little fockers
here's your first look at the third installment in the meet the parents franchise, little fockers. everyone from the original films - robert deniro, blythe danner, teri polo, owen wilson, barbra streisand and (of course) ben stiller - is back, alongside jessica alba, raven symone, laura dern...and on and on and on. little fockers doesn't look like it will disappoint. check out the trailer above.

this summer, the top 40 has been really good. i can't seem to get a lot of the songs out of my head. luckily, two of my favorite youtubers have done mash-ups of some of this summer's biggest hits. check them out above.

another real housewife, another "song"
real housewives of new jersey villainess danielle staub popped up on bravo's watch what happens live! talk show last night to premiere her debut sont, "real close." danielle was accompanied by producer/song writer/lesbian extraordinaire lori michaels. danielle, surprisingly, can actually sing. who knew? you took up stripping, drug dealing and being a "prostitution whore" before you chose to sing as a career? what a wack-a-doo. check out the (somewhat bizarre) performance above. i don't know. i feel like danielle should have laid out across the piano, no? staub and michaels are also said to be an item. nothing like a little lesbian action to cover up the fame whoring. oh wait...

glee goes foreign (exchange student)
it looks like glee is adding one more cast member next season. in addition to the previously announced new characters that are being cast through a national call, the creators of glee decided to add a foreign exchange student into the mix. but, instead of grabbing the girl from the national pool, some stunt casting has taken place. entertainment weekly is reporting that charice, the phillipines-born pop star and oprah discovery (she's huge across the world, somewhat unheard of in the u.s.), will be playing a foreign exchange student who gives rachel a run for her money in the singing department. that means ms. berry will have two singing rivals next season, as the already announced carrie underwood-like christian character has also been described as rachel's rival. it will be interesting to see if charice can act or if she'll just be a mess on screen. hopefully she makes the show (and new directions) better, not worse. check out charice's singing chops above on her song "pyramid."

miley's good morning
miley cyrus popped up on abc's good morning america yesterday to promote her new album can't be tamed. here are some highlights.
miley seems to have ditched the pop-star performance mode of doing intense choreography the whole time and is doing some off-putting combo of dance standing. if her outfit didn't say "i'm not a pop princess," her performance certainly did.
the best part of her "party in the usa" performance is the pans to the audience, which include moms and dads singing along.
i'm not sure rock ballads are miley's strong suit. especially ones everyone knows. especially when the original artist is duetting with her.
even when miley performed her own ballad, "the climb," it was a little shaky.

the real housewives on the hill
i think bravo may finally have found the cast to trump new jersey (i'm still mourning the loss of dina and grandma wrinkles, by the way). the other day the "reality"-focused net announced the premiere date - august 5th - and cast for the newest addition to the real housewives franchise, d.c. the cast looks like the greatest hot mess mix - all the women seem to be "heavily involved" in charities, which means "i have nothing better to do," and all look plucked, pulled and prodded within an inch of their life. here's a breakdown:
stacie scott turner seems to be the most level-headed (read: normal). according to her bravo bio, she's a family woman who comes from a humble background. she's also a real estate agent, like half the cast of o.c. i'm interested to see whether she'll be a background player or become a standout star. my guess? background. i'd compare her to a jeana from real housewives of orange county.
everyone knows michaele salahi as the white house gate crasher. she's a "model" (i love all these "models" that pop up on these shows) and will probably bring the crazy. she'll probably be a mix between batshit (allegedly) kelly from new york and sheree from atlanta. someone who thinks she deserves to be somebody.
catherine ommanney is the first foreigner to make it onto a real housewives cast. ommanney (what is with these last names?) is originally from london. her bravo bio makes her out to be a lot like jill from new york, so that could be a good thing or scary. she'll probably be everyone's friend to their face and their worst enemy behind their backs. she could also be a lot like the countess. bravo looks to be organizing their advertising around catherine and mary, so they'll probably be audience favorites.
lynda erkiletian scares me the most. she's a divorce modeling agent - why there's a modeling agency in d.c is beyond me - from the south. she looks like she could be similar to danielle from new jersey, but sounds like the countess from new york. i expect a lot of drama from her judging by the surgically enhanced arch in her eyebrows.
mary schmidt amons is a d.c. native and apparently a close pal of the kennedys. she has two fashion-based charities, which screams "i have too much time." she seems like she'll be a combo of vicki and tamra from orange county, a lethal combination.

music mania
two new songs from miley cyrus' can't be tamed (out next tuesday) leaked online today. "liberty walk" and "stay" are both departures from lead single "tamed," but all three songs fit together well. "liberty walk" could be a very big hit for the disney star, whereas i highly doubt "stay" will ever hear radio play. check them both out below.
"liberty walk" is an edgier, alternative pop track. it seems to be in the vain of where cyrus wants to go with her music - i.e. not a pop princess. it actually reminds me a lot of linkin park meets the black eyed peas. weird, i know.
"stay" is a yawn/so-so ballad. i guess every album needs one.
miss katy perry premiered the video for her summer smash "california gurls" today. it's basically a living version of candy land. i'm not sure how it represents a california girl, but it's enjoyable. check it out below.

tony, schmony
last night the american theater wing held their annual tony awards. while the show was crushed in the ratings thanks to the lakers v. celtics game (celtics won, btdubs), there are some moments worth checking out. ok, maybe just one. matthew morrison and lea michele, broadway vets and current stars of glee, each got a chance to show their stuff.
as far as the winners? well it looked a lot like an oscar ceremony. scarlett johannson, catherine zeta jones and denzel washington all took home statues. i have no clue who else won.
here's the situation
jersey shore's "the situation" is releasing a rap single. yes, he's trying to extend his 15 minutes. here's a preview of his, um, special talent.

oz gets gleeked
it looks like the wizard of oz is getting a glee-ful twist. an all new animated sequel is in the works for the classic story and lead character dorothy gale is getting a modern makeover. the character judy garland made famous will be voiced by lea michele, aka glee's rachel in dorothy of oz. the story will follow dorothy as she returns to oz the day after she gets home to kansas. after finding her little kansas town completely different from when she left it, she returns to oz in hopes of finding a way of setting things right back in the real world. problem is she gets to oz and - guess what? - it's a hot mess too. classic characters the scarecrow, the tin man and the (now formerly cowardly) lion are all back, this time voiced by dan aykrod, kelsey grammar and jim belushi, respectively. sounds like a pretty good cast. martin short will voice the film's new villian, the jester. the movie will feature a bunch of new music, too. if it didn't, that would be a big waste of lea. the film isn't set to come out until sometime in 2011 or 2012, but it sounds like it's a good attempt at updating a classic. but it could also be, like its settings, a hot mess. this is only one of five or so projects in the works as oz updates. the other big project is being worked on at drew barrymore's production company (flower films) and would follow dorothy's granddaughter's journey through the emerald city.
oh and i realized today i've been mis-numbering my posts for a while now. don't know how that happened.

get tangled
here's your first look at disney's tangled. originally called rapunzel, the film's name was changed after last year's the princess and the frog failed to attract boys to theaters. tangled is said to be a reworking of the classic fairy tale about the girl with long, long, long, long, longggg hair trapped in a tower. as fat as i know, this is disney's first ever cgi-animated musical. the cast includes mandy moore as rapunzel and zachary levi (tv's chuck) as flynn, the guy who is followed in the above teaser trailer. i can't tell if the story will in fact follow flynn more-so than rapunzel, or if that's just a marketing strategy. the latter is my guess. hopefully tangled will bring disney back into the "classic" animation - the look of the cgi was created to mimic hand animation - and musical - the guys behind the little mermaid and beauty and the beast - game.

am i getting old?
(sorry for the quality, but the whole show can be seen at mtv.com)
that has to be it right? why else would i not enjoy the mtv movie awards? i'm usually glued to the tv watching the show, but this year i fast-forwarded through the majority of it. plus, my dvr cut off i don't know how much of the show. i just didn't find it all that enjoyable. maybe because the show used to have a lot more over lap with movies with that got real awards. the past few years it's been all about twilight and harry potter. i don't think movies adapted from mythological book series are all that new or exciting. we all know what happens because we've all read the books - or at least read the synopses on wikipedia. plus, the awards used to be hosted by household names. who the hell is aziz ansari? i know he's on parks and recreation but, let's be honest, no one is watching that show. if you're going to get someone from tv comedy to host the show, get someone from the office or the cast of modern family. and, if it has to be parks and rec, get effing amy poehler. ok, that's my rant. onto the awards.
basically, twilight won everything. here's the few twilight didn't win.
best breakout star: anna kendrick, up in the air (she finally got something for it!)
best scared-as-shit performance: amanda seyfried, jennifer's body
biggest badass star: rain, ninja assasin (who?)
best comedic performance: zach galifinakis, the hangover
best villian: tom felton, harry potter and the half-blood prince
best fight: beyonce and ali larter, obsessed (this movie was in this awards year?)
best wtf moment: ken jeong (that naked asian), the hangover
generation award: sandra bullock
bullock's acceptance speech and the night's two performances, katy perry's "california gurls" and christina aguilera basically singing her entire album, are the only parts worth watching.

sandra bullock is back in the spotlight. the blind side star made an appearance at spiketv's guy's choice awards yesterday to accept the award for "troops choice, entertainer of the year." the actress referenced the pink elephant in the room right off the bat with a joke. check out her acceptance speech above and make sure to tune into mtv's movie awards tonight, where sandra is expected to appear once again.

bring it on: the tv series?
the cw's new series, hellcats, looks a lot like bring it on. aly michalka's character (that's the hard-edged blonde) seems like a xerox of the eliza dushku character in the movie; and ashley tisdale the kirsten dunst character. they just swapped hair colors, and moved to college. here's the full preview for the show i talked about a couple weeks ago when the cw announced it was adding the series to its fall schedule. though it does looks like regurgitated bring it on, that's a good thing.
