movie review: horrible bosses
the boys are back. after bridesmaids aimed to takeover the raunchy buddy-com, horrible bosses sneaks in to reclaim the territory. jason bateman, jason sudeikis and charlie day star as three best friends fed up with their, well, horrible bosses. nick (bateman) can't stand uber-manipulator harken (kevin spacey), dale can't seem to doge the advances of nymphomaniac dentist julia (jennifer aniston) and kurt struggles to communicate with bobby (colin farrell), who fell into his job through nepotism. the three friends jokingly talk about killing their bosses, but hypothetical soon turns real. wouldn't their live be some much better if their bosses just disappeared? the guys think so, hiring motherfucker jones (jamie foxx) to do the dirty work. what unfolds is a hilarious series of unfortunate events, coincidences and accidents. this is charlie day, mostly known for his work on fx's it's always sunny in philadelphia, breakout role, ala zach galifianakis in the hangover. the movie is packed with laughs from start to finish. mix that with its unpredictable nature and horrible bosses is set to be the movie of the summer.

album review: 4, beyonce
b is back. beyonce returns to the music scene with 4, her, yep, fourth studio effort. the album mixes disco and 90s r&b, creating beyonce's most musically advanced, but least commercial album to date. 4's mainstays are ballads, with few up-tempto exceptions- the failed single "1+1" is probably the weakest track on the album. the stand out tracks are actually found on the bonus disc, with "schoolin' life" having the greatest chance at radio success. you won't find anything resembling previous dance-based tracks by beyonce, with only "countdown" resembling anything she's put out before. 4 will go down as the beyonce equivalent to kelly clarkson's my december, an artistic endeavor for artistic endeavors sake- something only for the true fans. i wouldn't expect beyonce to tour with 4, but rather focus her effort on working on more music and evolving further. in the meantime, take a listen to the album, but make sure to mix your playlist with some of beyonce's former tracks like "crazy in love" and "deja vu," but not "single ladies." just because.

movie review: bad teacher
mix a little bad santa with some school of rock, add a little the sweetest thing, and you've got bad teacher. cameron diaz headlines this raunchy comedy as elizabeth halsey, a gold digger forced to return to her day job- as, what else? a middle school teacher- after her fiance dumps her for being too superficial. immediately elizabeth sets her sights on finding another well-to-do guy willing to let her ride his coattails. luck would have it that the new substitute (played by diaz's real life ex justin timberlake) happens to be an heir to a jewelry function. too bad another teacher, ms. squirrel, sets her sights on mr. substitute. in order to win the love battle against ms. squirrel, elizabeth decides her trump card will be a new pair of fake tits, but she doesn't have the money, leading to a bizarre mix of money-making schemes- all while trying to ward off the affections of the school's gym teacher (jason segel) and ms. squirrel's plan to bring her down. bad teacher struggles to find its comedic stride, mixing good dialogue with poorly executed sight gags and misplaced moments. but, at just an hour and a half it does hold your attention. diaz, timberlake and segel all deliver hilarious performances and i wouldn't be surprised to see all three back at the (spoiler alert) sequel hinted to at the end of the flick.

the teen dream hits broadway
there's really only one place a campy, poorly reviewed 90s teen movie with a cult following can end up: broadway. jawbreaker, 1999 dark comedy starring rose mcgowan, julie benz and rebecca gayheart, is currently being workshopped for a transition to the great white way. the producers of the musical posted videos of a rough run through on youtube in december, and recently launched twitter and facebook fan pages, which can only mean it's not long until we see courtney and her devilish ways on broadway. if you've never seen the movie, i strongly suggest you check it out- it's so bad it's good (and available, in full, on youtube). if you have seen the movie, check out the first song from the musical above and see what you think.

movie review: l!fe happens
if bridesmaids were to have a baby, it would be l!fe happens. no, seriously. originally titled bff & baby, l!fe happens follows three bffs, roommates kim (the always hilarious krysten ritter, who co-wrote the film), deena (a surprisingly funny kate bosworth) and laura (rachel bilson) as they navigate the single life in lalaland. oh, and kim has a baby. after a one-night stand, kim's world is turned upside down when she winds up preggers. flashing ahead to one year post-conception, the movie marks kim's transition from twenty-something to baby mama. when her baby daddy decides to skip town, kim struggles to strike a balance between friendship, love, work and mommy-hood. when she finally feels ready to re-enter the dating game, kim finds herself lying to potential partner nicolas (7th heaven's geoff stults), pawning off son max on deena. so what happens when everything becomes too much for kim and her lies start to get the best of her, and her roommates? well, you're just going to have to see for yourself. l!fe happens won't hit theaters until later this year, but it's a must see. mixing raunchy with rom-com, l!fe happens holds something for everyone. with a supporting cast including 3rd rock from the sun scene-stealer kristen johnston, american pie's jason biggs and weeds' justin kirk, you'll leave the theater in stitches and won't be able to help yourself from quoting lines like, "i saw a woman in a full burka go in for a bikini wax once. made me think of you" (fyi, that was said by self-made sexpert deena to still-a-virgin laura, making it hilarious). i'd even say director and co-writer kat coiro (in the video above, because there's no trailer ... yet) is the next diablo cody. maybe even funnier.

what i love (this week)
... on saturday. sue me.
the song
because it's been stuck in my head for more than 24 hours.
the show
if you don't watch food network star, you're not living.
the movie
i got to see this premiere at the la film festival. didn't love it. didn't hate it. leave it on the floor, which follows a homeless teen's journey into the world of drag queen balls (that sounds so dirty, but it's not really), is the kind of movie i would watch on tv, but never see in a theater. also it was a musical with bizarre music.
the look
i may or may not have watched all of season one of laguna beach: the real orange county on netflix. any by "may or may not" i mean i 100% did, in fact, watch it. i love all of it.

movie review: the art of getting by
the teen comedy grows up. the art of getting by follows george (freddie highmore), a high school loner attempting to coast his way to graduation. george's life turns upside down when he strikes up an unexpected friendship with sally (emma roberts). george's friendship with sally soon turns romantic, but he's too timid to act on his feelings. when he finally does get the nerve, it's too late. add in the possibility of not actually graduating and george winds up right where he started, but with more determination- he not only wants to graduate and win over sally, he has to. the art of getting by mixes quirky with realistic, comedy with heart. both highmore and roberts deliver breakout performances, complimented by a supporting cast including blair underwood, rita wilson and alicia silverstone. this is the kind of movie john hughes would be making if he were still around today.

the song
yes, i love this song. but you know what i love more? the video for it. insane. i wouldn't complain if kathy beth terry made her way to the big screen in a full length feature film.
the tv show
they come back this week. enough said.
the movie
just because i finally saw it, even though i didn't love it. i mean it was basically the first movie with every reference to "vegas" changed to "bangkok." oh well, the sequel's never as good as the original.
go see super 8. and fall in love with elle fanning. i think i even like her better than dakota.

movie review: super 8
ever wondered what it would be like to mash-up the goonies and et? well wonder no more. jj abrams and steven speilberg's collaborative tour de force, super 8, brings together the best elements of 80s kid adventures, mixing it with 1950s sci-fi and putting it on crack. the flick follows joe lamb and his group of friends as they try their hand at movie making. one night, as the film crew- plus breakout star elle fanning- prepare to shoot a scene at the town's train station, the unthinkable happens. a truck floors it head first into an oncoming train, forcing it off the tracks and creating one of the most intense train crashes ever caught on film. when the kids discover it was their old school teacher dr. woodward, a mystery begins to unfold. why would dr. woodward want to crash his truck? why was the train crash so explosive? and why is the air force getting involved? as the air force becomes more secretive and the kids realize they captured the train crash- and whatever was inside the train- on tape, joe and his friends become the ultimate investigators. with a supporting cast including friday night lights' kyle chandler and even 7th heaven's david gallagher, super 8 is a must see. the jokes will keep you laughing from start to finish and the action will keep you on the edge of your seat. even if you're not a sci-fi fan, super 8 is still worth checking out.

let's talk about this
people. really? is this real life? (see what i did there? slipped in a youtube reference- nbd). meet "nuttymadam3575," a twilight-obsessed fangirl who can't seem to control her emotions. seriously- it's like this girl has no control over what her body does when it comes to twilight. i don't understand people like this. i'd actually like someone to explain them to me- people who become obsessed with fictional characters. i understand it to a point- we've all gotten a little emotional when our favorite show or movie series comes to an end (ask me about what happened when hillary duff gave up her life as lizzie mcguire), but this? this is out of hand. do these people not realize that these characters, and even the actors who play them, aren't attainable? that they don't actually know them in real life? it's one thing to be a fan, but it's quite another to verge on stalker territory.

what i love (this week)
the song
emily valentine, a recently eliminated the voice contestant (who happens to share the name of one of the craziest beverly hills, 90210 characters), posted her original song, "it ends with a kiss, on youtube. i can only guess she's referencing the impromptu kiss she shared will a fellow contestant on stage.
the movie
yes.
the show
this show should be called "brooke mueller is batshit crazy," because that's what the "scenes from this season" point to, and i cannot wait. can. not. wait.
don't really like the song, but i like this album art.

let's talk about this...
i just don't know how i feel about it (it being the kardashian family lip syncing to katy perry's "et"). after reading in the hollywood reporter today that e!'s new creative chief wants to move from reality to scripted programming, i was a little surprised. what's going to happen to our kardashian klan? but i'm starting to think we've been over-kardashian-ed. we've kind of kard-overdosed. though, if i could get paid millions just to live me life and have someone film it, maybe i'd feel differently.
also, this happened...
um, hi. you were beaten. maybe violence should be avoided? ok, great. thanks.
