victoria's secret fashion show 2011
or as i like to call it, the body issues and boners special. i'm not reviewing the fashions. actually, i'm not reviewing anything- just watch these awesome performances from tonight's broadcast. kanye, jay-z, maroon 5 and nicki minaj all shut it down on stage.

what i love (this week)

the song
i found tessa and the typecast's "hold on 'til morning" where i find all my music, in an ad. it's the perfect summer-sounding song to get you through this intro-to-winter weather everyone but california seems to be experiencing now.

the show
i know we won't get to see the full kim and kris fallout, but i can't resist. i watched the kardashian empire rise and i'll watch it fall.

the movie
it's the one movie i saw in the last week that didn't include in my mass review yesterday, so ... here it is? it's the best looking of the saga- director bill condon isn't in to the whole shaky cam, dark and dreary look that the previous directors adopted.

the look book(s)
this week i'm bringing back the books. it's been a while since i've reviewed a recent read and that's because, well, i haven't read recently. but this week, copious amounts of travel time let me knock out two great reads (and, fyi, both will make great gifts). first, mindy kaling's is everyone hanging out without me (and other concerns). i love a good title, especially one i can relate to- this is a question i ask myself all the time- is sure to reel me in. the promise of laughs? even better. kaling, who you might know as kelly kapoor from the office, offers life highlights, starting with her life as a chubby androgynous suburban kid to popular-girl-in-her-head to struggling artist to the fame and fortune of hollywood. it'll have you laughing from cover to cover, with plenty of relatable stories and insight into the office you never knew you needed.

robert rave's conversations and cosmopolitans, co-written by his mom, jane, is another hard-to-put-down read. i've raved (pun fully intended) about rave's fictional works spin and waxed before, but this book's a little different. c&c is a memoir following rave's relationship with his mom post-childhood. it all begins with rave finally coming out to his mom and weaves through the duo's strengthened bond as they navigate weight watchers meetings, new york nightlife and life's little miseries together, all with a side of snark and loving humor. if you have a mom, or know someone who has a mom (that means everyone if you didn't catch on), this is a must-read.

oscar movie watch 2011
it's that time of year again- every holiday season, tons of movies hit the silver screen as oscar bait. here are a few of my favorites that i've seen so far.

movie review: like crazy
if i had to sum up like crazy in a phrase it would be "shitfaced love story." the film follows 20somethings jacob and anna as they fall in love just before college graduation. the catch is anna's a british citizen and only in the states on a student visa. when her visa runs out, anna decides to stick it out for the summer for the sake of her relationship. at the end of the summer, anna heads home for a family wedding, planning to return to california at the end of the week. catch two: customs stops anna when she lands at lax and sends her straight back to london for breaking her visa. what follows is a long distance, often drunk, relationship interrupted by time zones, tests (like jennifer lawrence's samantha), a marriage and extreme heartache. this is definitely not a feel good movie, and ends on somewhat of an unsure note, but is a must see for anyone that's been in love or wants to be in love- so everyone.

movie review: the descendants
george clooney secures himself another oscar nod with the descendants. clooney stars as matt king, a hawaiian family man faced with two major dilemmas: his family owns a the so-called last plot of virgin hawaiian land that needs to be sold asap to avoid turmoil, and his wife's in the hospital with a coma after a major boat accident. king must balance his kids- highschooler alex (secret life of the american teenager's shailene woodley) and pre-teen troublemaker scottie- his relatives and his wife's decreasing medical condition. throw in the discovery that his wife was cheating on him right before the accident and king's world goes from unstable to upside down. the only person able to upstage clooney is woodley, who proves she really can act. as clooney said, "she fucking cries under water." expect woodley to grab some major award nods, too, and hopefully leave secret life behind when her contract's up in 2013.

movie review: my week with marilyn
if michelle williams doesn't win an oscar for this, she will have been robbed. williams completely transforms into screen legend marilyn monroe, circa 1957. monroe heads to london to film the prince and the showgirl, alongside sir laurence olivier (played brilliantly by kenneth branagh). adapted from colin clark's memoir, the movie follows clark as the third assistant director or "gopher," meaning he can "go for this, go for that" at the drop of a hat. clark winds up being one of the few people monroe, insecure and fragile, trusts on set. the duo- monroe, 30, and clark, just 24- form an unlikely pair, leading to a puppy love affair. there's not one bad performance in my week, making it one to watch for every category this award season.

day 3.324

she's still making music, guys
she's got to have something relevant to play at the super bowl, right? the queen of reinvention goes back to her roots on this demo track for "give me all your love." madonna sounds her '80s-best, but throws in some of her '90s flair on the track that references a lot of her former hits. check it out above, and expect a full-edit to hit radio asap.

day 3.323

must listen: cher lloyd's sticks + stones
if you don't know who cher lloyd is, you're missing out- but, i'm here to help. lloyd placed in the finals of last year's uk x factor. lloyd didn't win, but her pop-rap sensibility screams "bring me to america." her debut album, sticks + stones, dropped overseas and i can't stop playing it here, stateside. give some of my top picks a spin, below.

"grow up," ft. busta rhymes
this is my favorite off the ep, a peter pan-themed anthem featuring busta rhymes. it'll give you a good snapshot of the sound lloyd brings to the table.

"beautiful people," ft. carolina liar
lloyd brings the boys of carolina liar in on this bluesy ballad. if you've ever wanted to tell someone off in a sad, reflective way, then this is the song for you.

"with ur love," ft. mike posner
by now you've probably noticed a theme- collaborations are key on stick + stones. "with ur love" is the second official single off the album- you'll find it hard to get out of your head after a listen. or two. or three.

"over the moon"
a track without someone featured on it? unheard of! "over the moon" does feature the catchiest hook off the album, and the most original rapping by lloyd.

definitely check out the rest of cher's debut- you won't be disappointed. most of the album is available on spotify, so what are you waiting for?

what i love (this week)

the song
this plus the justin bieber "freestyle" are really working for me this week.

the show
they're baaaaaaaaaaaaack (tonight).

the movie
here's my mini-review for justin timberlake and amanda seyfried's in time: go see it. it's bonnie and clyde meets robin hood meets the matrix meets the island meets ... i don't know, just go watch it, ok?

the look
so it's not really a look, just a glee-tastic viral video worth sharing. you have to watch the whole :43 second clip. i know, tough duty. suck it up.

the real (precious) housewives of atlanta

gabourey sidibe popped up on the wendy williams show this week, joined by a new segment: "hairpiece theater." watch as wendy and gabby recreate a scene between kim zolciak and nene leakes. wendy totally lifted this bit from bonnie hunt, but who cares?

November 3, 2011

day 3.320

hill, tatum head to 21 jump street
gawker calls it "never been kissed with guns." sounds about right- and good- to me. check out jonah hill and channing tatum in the trailer for the new version of 21 jump street. rumor is there's a johnny depp cameo (he starred in '80s series that inspired the film) in the film's final cut.

hilarious
tim gunn does pre-school. "i think this is refrigerator material."

day 3.318

what could've been
if you were a fan on abc family's greek like i was, then chances are you were disappointed by how open ended the finale left casey's storyline. well worry no more- an alternate ending to the college comedy popped up online today! in this version, all the graduates return to cyprus-rhodes to see rusty and friends walk in cap and gown two years later. get a few more answers and some closure in the alternate ending, above.

american pie reunites
the final installment in the american pie franchise won't hit theaters until april, but here's the first full-length trailer for the flick. should be a fitting send-off for jim & co.
