a night to remember, a movie to forget. disney's prom follows a group of high school seniors as they prepare for the night of the lives (so far): prom. the movie comes off as a whole-hearted attempt at a tween-themed love actually. but what it lacks is a consistent message, or any message at all. the characters all seem to wind up at the same place they were at when the movie begins. there's little to no character development; we know little about any them, other than that they all go to school together and they're all going to prom (duh!). the main couple (friday night light's star aimee teegarden and newcomer thomas mcdonell) are cliffs-notes versions of grease's danny and sandy. it's a classic take on "opposites attract," but with little conflict or drama. the trailer's documentary-style interviews would have been a nice addition to the movie, giving it some depth and interest. instead, we get cardboad-cutout performances by a cast of virtual unknowns. disney would have been better off releasing prom as a made-for-tv movie. it's a fluffy mix of the network's kid-coms (sitcoms for kids) and a teen soap, but i highly doubt many parents will want to take their kids to the theater to see a tv-quality show. skip the flick, unless you're feeling nostalgic for high school. and if you are, god help you.

lilo does leno
can she make a comeback? lindsay lohan popped up on last night's late night to promote, well ... nothing really. it was all about image rehabilitation for lilo, trying to convince us she's learned from her mistakes and she's excited to head back to the big screen with her new role in a john gotti biopic. i love me some lilo, but i think it would be better for her to shy away from the spotlight and just prove to us that she still has the acting chops.

what i love (this week)
the song
bruno mars, "the lazy song." i've been obsessed with this song since i first heard mars' full album. it's the perfect song for, well, a lazy day.
the movie
in a recurring theme, i happen to be watching this movie while i type this blog post. lifetime's william & kate delivers all you expect in a lifetime movie - bad acting, a predictable plot and that "i can't put my finger on it" factor that keeps you glued to the screen. plus, it's royal wedding week! what would my blog be without a reference to the impending nuptials between the real william and kate?
the show
it's no secret i love glee (though, i refuse to be labeled a "gleek"). while this half of season 2's been a bit of a disappointment, next week's gaga-centric episode looks like it will put me back in good graces with glee. kurt returns to mckinley. zises runs for prom queen. and we get an extra 30 minutes.
the look
ok, this is cheating a little bit, since it's a movie trailer, but here's my rationalization. i love emma stone. the way emma stone looks in the help cracks me up, and makes me even more excited to see this movie - but, first, i need to read the book. god, i have too many books to read.

it's like an eargasm
nicki minaj + ke$ha + britney? i mean, could you really ask for anything more. listen to this over-the-top remix of britney's latest single, "till the world ends. " brit brit's newly announced tour-mate adds some much needed intensity to the song's opening (alluding to her ongoing fued with former rap queen lil' kim), while the song's writer (ke dollar sign ha) takes over some of brit brit's opening verses. if this and the britney remix to "s&m" don't hit radio soon, there's going to be a problem.

movie review: water for elephants
if you think robert pattinson and reese witherspoon would make a winning combination, you'd be right. the duo headline the big screen adaptation of water for elephants, which follows the story of jacob jankowski (pattinson) as he, literally, runs away with the circus. the flick takes place in the middle of the great depression, when money's tight and circuses are pulling every trick possible to stay afloat. jacob meets august (inglorious basterds' breakout christoph waltz) and his wife, marlena (witherspoon); august serves as the circus' ringmaster, while marlena is its star attraction. not so shockingly, jacob falls for marlena and (again, not so shockingly) drama ensues. the movie stays religiously faithful to the book, with very little left out; and, at exactly two hours long, it does a good job of keeping the action moving and engaging the audience - i didn't feel bored one time during the screening. the actors are all at the top of their game; pattinson's finally gotten beyond trying to cover his accent, witherspoon is, as far as i can tell, playing a romanticized version of herself and waltz balances a slimy role with a strong likability factor. director francis lawrence, known mainly for his music video work, does an exceptional job of making the 1930s into a modern fantasy. you feel like you're in the train cars with the characters and want to stay a while. while water for elephants probably won't win many awards (most likely costuming and visuals, at most), it will keep you entertained. if you've read the best-selling book its based on (and you should), you'll definitely want to check it out. and, if you haven't, well, what's your problem?

the voice: it's coming
check out this 12 minute extended preview for nbc's new singing competition, the voice. judging by this, the voice may be the first show with enough talent, and enough originality (even though it's based on a show from the netherlands), to take on american idol. and kudos (or kadooze) to nbc for getting this thing up and running so fast. in the time its taken for fox's the x factor to find its judges (which is still undecided), the peacock net launched production with four of music's biggest names. the only name the x factor's landed so far is l.a. reid, who's known within the music industry, but is nowhere near a household name. the only thing that worries me about the voice is the concept of sight-unseen. no matter how you cut it, ugly people don't become pop stars. the show premieres tuesday on nbc- hopefully it can help the fourth place network make a comeback. in the meantime, enjoy the group performance featuring all four judges - cee-lo, blake shelton, adam levine and christina aguilera.

beyonce claims girls run the world
you'd think a new beyonce track would be super exciting, right? but if you give one listen to the demo for "girls (who rule the world)," i don't think you'll be impressed. while i'm sure we'll all be claiming "girls" as our new favorite song once the official track hits radio stations, i'm not sold on it yet. "girls" sounds like a rejected song from her album b-day. it's very repetitive, but not really catchy. you can't even tell what b's saying the whole time. the only reason "girls" will be a success is because beyonce's name's attached to it - she's reached the same point at britney - they could literally record the phone book and it would go #1. check out the leak above and hope the song's final mix is better than this.

day 3.128
what i love (this week)
the song
i've been listening to lady gaga's "judas" for two days ... and i still have no effing clue what she's saying. but, it's catchy. it's number one on itunes. and, let's be honest, anything gaga does is going to make it on these weekly lists. well, unless she wears another meat dress. that was weird.
the movie
because i love reese witherspoon. did anyone ever realized how hyper-sexualized her early roles were? cruel intentions, pleasantville, and election are all borderline porn. ok, maybe that's an extreme. but its definitely shower nozzle masturbation material (name the movie where that quotes from and you win, well, you win a pat on the back).
tv show
funniest show on tv right now. it's a bold statement, but i'm making it. abc premiered what seemed like a failed mid-season show it was trying to burn off. but happy endings is hilarious. it's a friends for the 2010s. with a strong ensemble cast - including elisha cuthbert and damon wayans, jr. - and some of the best writing on tv (it's like these characters are real people), the alphabet net better renew this show, or give it a chance. the first week's ratings weren't great, so make sure you tune in this wednesday when the third episode airs (eps. 1 and 2 are up on hulu right now).
the look
i'm really feeling reese this week. and i can't wait for this movie (water for elephants) to come out- if you haven't read the book, um ... drive yourself to the bookstore now. no, really.

gaga goes biblical
well, she lived up to her promise. after releasing "born this way," lady gaga said the rest of the album (also titled born this way) would have a very different sound. cue "judas." gaga's second single off her second album is a lot more like what i was expecting (and what seems like a lot of people were expecting) from the momma monster. while "born this way" was a nice throwback surprise, "judas" gels more with the sound gaga created over the past year or two. it's very electro. very catchy. and very hard to understand. i couldn't tell you any of the lyrics on first listen. hopefully born this way (the album) is a mix of the sounds of "judas" and "born this way" (the song) - i don't know if i could handle a whole album that sounds like either of those two. but we'll have to wait until the end of next month to find out. in the meantime, check out "judas" above - i'm sure you'll be hearing it non-stop for the next month.
time for an eargasm: gwyneth does adele
adele's finally made her way onto glee. in next week's return episode, returning guest star gwyneth paltrow takes on "turning tables," and i can't get enough.

day 3.125
movie review: are you ready to scream?
ten years later and it still holds up. wes craven and co's comeback did not disappoint- in fact, i want to run back to the theater and watch it again. picking up 10 years after the events of scream 3 (when we thought it was all over, right?), scream 4 follows sidney (neve campbell) back to her hometown of woodsboro on a book tour ... on the anniversary of the original massacres. but did anyone expect sid's first visit back home in 10 years to be drama free? in the past decade, 7 stab movies were made - the movies-within-the-movies based on sidney's life - and have become cult classics. dewey and gale (david arquette and coutney cox, in an awkward-to-watch on screen relationship) have gotten married - dewey's now the town's sheriff and gale's given up the journalistic dream for love. and the town's teen population's become obsessed with the stab franchise- they're all glad woodsboro's known for something. so when someone starts recreating the original murders, it's a game of "guess who" that's pretty tricky to figure out. like they say in the trailer, all the rules have changed. scream 4 keeps you on the edge of your seat for two hours - you think you know what's coming, but, trust me, you won't figure it out until the sequel's shocking reveal. the best part is watching the original three survivors (sid, dewey and gale) work together again to uncover the mystery they just can't seem to escape. with great references and allusions to the original trilogy, plus breakout performances by emma roberts and (a surprisingly likable) hayden panetierre, scream 4 is a must see for any fan - whether you've seen all three originals, just one or just want a good scare/laugh fest. you'll leave the theater wanting more, which is good for the filmmakers, because they've apparently mapped out two more movies.

i miss dina
let's just say i'm going to need some serious table flipping to make up for the big blonde void in the new season of the real housewives of new jersey. bravo premiered the trailer for the new season of the (arguably) trashiest franchise in the series. the one plus? villianess danielle staub is no more. but, don't worry, it looks like bravo's bringing the drama. replacing dina and danielle are two of teresa giudice's family members - cousin kathy (who shares the miniature forehead) and sister-in-law melissa, and neither lady seems to like teresa. newly svelte caroline still seems to be running the show, and jacquelline still seems to be the wet blanket. at least they're brining in her ex for some drama? check out the trailer above and get ready for may 16th when the bridge and tunnel crowd returns to our tvs.

day 3.122
when brit brit met riri
um, hi. this is insane. rihanna released the remix to her surprise hit "s&m" today and who does it feature? britney spears. yes, the britney spears. the princess of pop lends her breathy vocals to a retooled version of the sexed-up song. this really should have been the original release, not a remix - especially because it's more just a duet, not a "remix" in the eurotrash dance techno sense of the word. it's virtually identical to rihanna's original version, with the addition of a new britney-only version, and miss spears taking some of riri's original lyrics. this songs going to be all over the radio - i would venture to guess we will never hear the original version ever again over the airwaves. now, we just have to hold out for a music video. while one hasn't been filmed, rihanna said she'd like to do one because, what else, she wants to spank britney.
and, in other britney news, it looks like she won't be flying solo on her upcoming tour. after enrique iglesias backed out, nicki minaj stepped in. the princess of pop and rap's latest and greatest? now the $70+ tickets seem reasonable. the duo need to release a single - or they could follow rihanna's lead and release a remix to one of the new tracks off femme fatale ("gasoline," anyone?) - because the world needs to see britney and minaj take the stage together. asap.

what i love (this week)
the song
i think christina aguilera's bionic is one of the most overlooked albums of the last year. maybe it was the lead single? maybe it was the marketing? i don't know why this album tanked, but i really think everyone should give it another listen. "bionic" is one of the most get-stuck-in-your-head worthy songs, well, ever.
the movie
i'm kind of cheating here. technically, this is a miniseries. but it came from netflix, so it counts. right? i read this book (joyce carol oates' blonde) over the summer - all 738 pages (in, like, size 9 font!) - so i was very interested in seeing how someone adapted something so massive and intricate into a movie. fyi, blonde's a fictional take on the rise and fall of marilyn monroe. while it's not perfect, it's keeping me entertained (i still have another disc to watch). a big screen version is being planned for next year, with naomi watts in the role of marilyn. now that should be interesting.
tv show

this looks cray cray
she's back. after the hills went off the air last year, we all started to wonder exactly what would happen to the cast of characters mtv introduced us to. low and behold, the return of audrina patridge. the bedroom-eyed sidekick landed her own reality series with vh1. but, this time, it looks like we're actually going to see audrina's real life- not just a world created for tv ... but don't worry- judging by the trailer (above), there's still plenty of drama in audrina's life, scripted or not. it doesn't look like audrina's brining the crazy, though. it's her family. check out the trailer above for the new series, set to premiere april 17th.

the hunger games casting update - really? really?
so this happened. yeah. after the surprising news that winter's bone's jennifer lawrence would tackle the role of katniss everdeen, lionsgate revealed today that josh hutcherson and liam hemsworth would take on the two male leads in the hunger games film trilogy. the casting is iffy on its own, but when i learned which roles the two landed, i was ... well, shocked. if anything, i would have pegged liam for the role of peeta, the blonde baker's son who proves to be an ally, enemy and love interest to katniss; and josh could've have been gale, katniss' best friend, a rugged hunter with almost grecian features. too bad the two will be playing the opposite roles. after less-than-stellar fan feedback flooded the blogosphere, i would've thought the studio would go the smart route and try to nab the two actors fans were campaigning for - weeds' hunter parrish for peeta, and the chronicles of narnia's ben barnes for gale. plus- while they're only a couple years apart in age, it will look more like lawrence is babysitting hutcherson, rather than developing romantic feelings. hopefully hutcherson's acting chops, which he proved he had in last year's the kids are all right, make up for the sure-to-be awkward scenes between the duo. i'm sure hutcherson and hemsworth (sounds like a law firm) will do the roles justice, but i can't help but think what could've been. and there better be a big hair and make-up budget, as all three leads have to dye their hair to match their character descriptions.
also...
who let carrie go on stage looking like this?

day 3.114
what i love (this week)
so here's what i'm loving (read: basically obsessing over) this week.
the song
one of the joys of being home this past week was listening to satellite radio - and only satellite radio - in my parents' cars. satellite radio provides some real, er, gems (like duck sauce's "barbra streisand") and some of the catchiest songs no one's ever heard, like jtx's "love in america." the first time i heard the song, i assumed it was the latest from the jo bros. i was wrong. at first, i couldn't stand the song. then i grew to like it. then love it. and now, i can't get enough. it's exactly what electro-pop should sound like, and has introduced the catchphrase "hey kids here we go, heavy metal disco" into my lexicon.
the movie
if you have not seen easy a, go kill yourself. ok, don't go kill yourself. just go watch it. this could be the movie i love every week, but because i happen to be watching it as i type this post, it made it in this week. next to mean girls and clueless, easy a is the most quotable teen comedy. plus, i don't think i'll ever get sick of emma stone. ever. she's literally the only reason i can't wait for the amazing spiderman to come out next year.
tv show
two words: latoya jackson. i just can't get enough. alongside certifiable crazies like dionne warwick and gary busey, jackson makes this show worth watching. if you haven't caught onto this season, definitely tune in tonight. it'll be sooooo worth it.
the look
the long sleeve button down and shorts. i'm currently living in this, and don't plan on changing until summer ends.

book review: the bedwetter
every time i travel, i always manage to do one thing - finish an entire celebrity memoir during the trip. this saturday's read? the bedwetter, by sarah silverman. the irreverent, chipmunk voiced comedian delivers comedy gold in her memoir, which features "stories of courage, redemption and pee." silverman's childhood, er, problem with bedwetting is the unifying device in the book, brought up more times than it probably should have been. overall, the book fits somewhere between the witty observations of david sedaris, and the hard-to-believe-they're-true stories of chelsea handler. you probably wouldn't want to pick up the book (which has been out since april of last year) if you're not a silverman fan - you'd probably find the humor a little off, and be confused by some of her implied references. the one thing missing from the book? an explanation of the comedian's break-up with late night host jimmy kimmel. the duo were together for nearly six years, yet the only references to him were in photo captions. how'd her editors (who silverman both thanks and eviscerates in the book) let that chapter of silverman's life not become a chapter of its own? check out the book if you want a quick, funny read. but don't expect too much.
