the vmas, 2011
here are the highlights, the winners and the what just happened moments.
gaga opened the show. as a man. and then continued to act as this man (jo calderone) for the remainder of the show. she's special. really special.
these two can do no wrong. ok, kanye can. but never, never jay.
if "shutting it down" were in the dictionary, this performance would be next to it.
this was great, but i have two questions: 1) why were children performing it? 2) why wasn't this a medley of britney songs performed by today's younger pop stars?
best vma performance ever? i mean she's currently carrying jay-z's baby. or is it destiny's child? (see what i did there?)
rip amy.
because it makes so much sense to perform a song that requires 95% bleeping.
as far as the winners:
- video of the year- katy perry, "firework"
- best female video- lady gaga, "born this way"
- best new artist- tyler, the creator
- video vanguard- britney spears
- best male video- justin bieber, "u smile"
- best collaboration- katy perry ft. kanye west, "e.t."
- best hip hop video- nicki minaj, "super bass"
- best rock video- foo fighters, "walk"
- best pop video- britney spears, "till the world ends"
- best video with a message- lady gaga, "born this way"

yes
david guetta's soon-to-be-released album, nothing but the beat, is looking better and better. check out the recently leaked track "turn me on," featuring nicki minaj. not only does rap's queen spit some new verses, she also shows off some pretty impressive pipes. it looks like david guetta's the new timbaland, creating smash hits with the artists of the moment. nothing but the beat drops next week, august 30.

i make my newsy debut
i've been writing for newsy, a multisource video news analysis content provider, since january. we deliver two to three minute videos analyzing news coverage for viewers on most mobile platforms and online. today, i started anchoring- by surprise. so here are my first two anchored newsy stories (natch, i also wrote them)- wearing borrowed clothes and with no tv make-up on. enjoy.

lindsay lohan secretly paints graffiti at night. well, in music videos at least. what if a secret, underground celebrity graffiti ring existed? think about it.

gaga, the mermaid?
um. couldn't she make a traditional video just once? lady gaga debuted the video for "you and i," a six minute piece of cinematic confusion. the song's great, and the video an artistic feat- but together? they make no sense. while everyone is sure to praise gaga for her ingenuity (for the billionth time), i can't help but wonder, why the eff are you dressed as a mermaid?

what i love (this week)
the song
summer is almost over. why?
the show
this is the worst thing on tv right now, but i watched two hours of it last night. and will probably watch the next two hours next weekend.
the movie
i want to see it again. and again. and then at least one more time. ok, two more times.
the look
i wish this were real.

movie review: the help
oscars for everyone! that was my first thought after screening the help, starring emma stone, viola davis, bryce dallas howard, octavia spencer and allison janney. based on kathryn stockett's best-selling novel of the same name, the help follows recent college grad skeeter (stone) back home to jackson, mississippi, where she finds she just doesn't quite fit in anymore. all her high school friends are now married with kids and help of their own, no career aspirations in sight- and plenty of blind racism to go around. aspiring journalist skeeter can't quite stand the social inequality she's faced with on a daily basis. each days she's forced to watch the help look after less-than-appreciative families, the more an idea plants itself in her head- she needs to write a book. taking a big risk, maids aiblene (davis), reserved and respected, and the outspoken minny (spencer) join skeeter in her conquest to take down hilly hollbrook (howard), the leader of the high society pack. the movie holds onto the spirit of the book, making slight changes that work- for the better- on screen. while some dramatic moments are cut short, and some comedic moments beaten to death, the movie does not feel like a two-plus hour history lesson. instead, it's an escape to the past with stand-out performances and memorable moments you won't want to leave behind.

what is this?
praise jesus! real housewife of new jersey, melissa gorga, finally released her recoded-at-home debut song, "on display." it's, er, special. she sings about paparazzi chasing her because, you know, that's happened.

american idol music video overload
this is an interesting move- american idol season 10 alums scotty mccreery, lauren alaina and pia toscano all released videos for their debut songs. all on the same day. while scotty, lauren and pia aren't exactly targeting the same music audience- well, scotty and lauren are, but anyway- it seems like they should've staggered these, right? all the videos are pretty bland, with toscano's coming off as the most commercial and lauren alaina's coming off as the most creative, which the song desperately needs. check them all out below:

teen choice awards 2011, aka snooze fest 2011
am i getting old? i'm starting to think so, because i had little to no interest in this year's teen choice awards. my lack of enthusiasm was only notched down a few pegs further when the likes of twilight and bad teacher beat out bridesmaids. bridesmaids! teens have no taste. at least the musical guests entertain, er, were there.
and i'm posting this acceptance speech just for emma stone:

what i love (this week)
the song
cobra starship should just rename themselves "summer band," because these boys take over my speakers every summer with their catchy electropop sound. while "you make me feel good" is no "good girls go bad" (where's leighton meester's full album, b-t-dubs?), it's still summer playlist-worthy.
the show
this trainwreck is back on tv. it's like big brother in a trailer park, which is saying a lot if you watch big brother.
the movie
we should all re-watch this, ok? ok.
the look
i am genuinely worried for this woman's well-being.

movie review: the change-up
rude, crude and hyper-sexual. the change up is everything every guy wants in a date-night movie. jason bateman and ryan reynolds star as 30-something friends since childhood, both un-satisfied with their lives. bateman's a successful lawyer, with a great wife and family. reynolds, a struggling actor who makes up for his less-than-stellar professional life with an all star, er, personal life. after a night out, the duo stop by a park fountain to- what else- relieve themselves. turns out the fountain has magical powers and the next morning jason and ryan wake up in each other's bodies. they're not reinventing the wheel with this switching bodies comedy, but the sharp writing and side story-lines make up for the lack of originality. bateman and reynolds are joined on screen by funny lady leslie mann and hot-girl-of-the-moment olivia wilde, who can each hold their own against both guys' comedic chops. if you're looking for mindless entertainment that'll make you laugh, and get you out of the summer heat for a good two hours, definitely check out the change up. but, if you're easily offended, you might just want to stick to a screening of the smurfs.
what is this??
um, kris jenner. why? but thank you. thank you so much for this.

desperate housewives, 2004-2012
get ready to say goodbye to susan, lynette, bree and gabrielle. the ladies of wisteria lane will make their final appearance on your tv screen this may, when abc's desperate housewives raps up its eighth season. the alphabet net has yet to make the official announcement- expect that sunday, during their television critics' association panel- but word is the series' stars got word of the show's cancellation today. while it'll be sad to see the show come to an end, it's definitely time for the moving vans to make their way to the lane. creator marc cherry's original plan was to end the series after seven seasons, and he has since stepped down as show-runner- he'll be credited as a consultant for the final season. i do like that the show will film the majority of its swan song knowing this is the end. there's nothing worse than a show getting the axe post-season. hopefully they find creative ways to wrap up the crazy storylines set up in last season's finale (and finally give vanessa williams some real material to work with) so this year is worthwhile and not another sappy melodrama.

after pop princess britney spears penned a song for her new album, disney darling selena gomez decided to pay tribute by adding a b. spears' medley into her tour. check out the (rough, fan shot) video of selena taking on hits like "one more time," "toxic" and "hold it against me" above.
