day 3.110

bravo, bravo!
one of my favorite network's - bravo - make a big announcement today: it's adding 11 new shows to its lineup. yes, e-lev-en! in addition to renewing the real housewives of beverly hills (yay, more giggy!), real housewives of atlanta (yay, more music by kim zolciak!), tabitha's salon takeover (yay, more bitchiness!), bethenny ever after (yay, more bitchiness by bethenny!) and top chef: just desserts (um, yeah), the network is launching new shows with some old faces - here's a breakdown.

  • interior therapy with jeff lewis - this is the show i'm most excited for, expect for the fact that it might mean flipping out is dunzo. obsessive-compulsive house flipper jeff lewis will be moving in with design-challenged homeowners, making over their homes during his stay. along for the ride is lewis's partner in crime, jenni pulos, as well as his maid, zoila (dying).
  • it's a brad brad world - former rachel zoe associate brad goreski gets his own show! cameras will follow zoe's protege as he navigates launching his own styling business. should be similar in format and tone to the rachel zoe project, whose future currently sits in limbo :(
  • the therapists - it's a show about, well, therapists. crews will follow some of la-la-land's top shrinks, so hopefully we'll get a chance to peak behind some celeb therapy sessions. on second thought, the therapy scenes on bethenny ever after make me want to hurt myself.
  • mad fashion - remember chris march from project runway? he was the guy who basically designed all his clothes for drag queens in daytime. well now we get to see what he's been up to since losing his season of bravo (formerly) signature show. apparently he has a crazy crew working alongside him, so mad fashion has potential.
  • million dollar listing: new york - bravo's learned that franchising works, so why not try it with another one of the net's hit shows? should be the same schtick as its california counterpart, maybe with a lady agent or two.
  • miss advised - with the success of millionaire matchmaker, why not help out the less financially stable? three self-proclaimed "singles relationship experts" will help women find balance in their personal and professional lives.
  • most eligible: dallas - while we wait for the real housewives franchise to make its way to the big d, this will have to suffice. tv line says "think the hills, but dallas." we'll get a sneak behind some of dallas' hottest clubs, restaurants and events as we follow a group of young, and single, dallas-ites. i fell like the net tried this concept (and failed) with miami social ... so we'll see how this pans out.
  • project soulmate - could this mean patti stanger's on her way off bravo's must list? new york matchmaker lori zaslow takes the reins on project soulmate, which sounds exactly like stanger's matchmaker.
  • ready to wear - it's goodwill for rich people. cameras will take us behind the scenes of some of new york's most exclusive consignment shops. you know, the places where luann de lesseps likes to throw charity events on real housewives of new york?
  • roble and co - celebrity restaurant drama. yawn.
  • tabitha takes over - bravo knows when it has a star, and it knows when to use one. tabitha will make the move from overseeing salon takeovers, to taking over small businesses and companies across the country. should be interesting to see if her salon savvy will translate.
other noticeable omissions from bravo's announcement? the real housewives of d.c., which has long been the focus of cancellation speculation. bravo has yet to make an official announcement, but i'd say we can count on not seeing the capital ladies again. and project runway wanna-been the fashion show is missing, too. now that bravo's found success in areas beyond fashion design shows, i'd say move on - top chef's the last of a dying breed (remember shear genius and top design?)

day 3.109

she tried?
abc's good morning america played the pre-recorded britney spears performance filmed this weekend in san francisco today and ... well ... she's still performing! brit's latest album (femme fatale, out today) is wall-to-wall dance track, falling somewhere in between in the zone and blackout. but britney's not really dancing, which got a lot of people talking - if you google "britney spears" and "dancing," you're bound to find a lot of criticism. so i did some investigative bloggering (meaning i watched her entire videography on her vevo page), and guess what i found? she never really danced. while we've all come to think of britney as a dancer after stand-out vma performance after stand-out vma performance (minus 2007's "gimme more" performance), i guess we all assumed she could really dance. but if you go back and watch those performances, she just has really good stage presence and really good back-up dancers. she's never done anything especially complicated or game changing. check out the full gma performance above, and cut the girl some slack.

day 3.108

movie poster madness
harry potter's final face-off. the hangover hits bangkok. and brad pitt and sean penn make their big screen returns. apparently the studios thought today was a great day to release new movie posters. and they're arguably three of the coolest movie posters, from three of the most anticipated flicks. check out the posters below - which movie are you most excited to see this summer?

what i love (this week)
i've been thinking of ways to expand my blog lately - if you've haven't noticed, it seems like my posts are getting a little shorter (it's a time thing). it's also hard to find something i'm passionate enough about to write about every day. so i'm adding this weekly segment, what i'm calling "what i love (this week)." every sunday, i'll post the song, the tv show, the movie and the fashion fad i'm loving for the week - and probably some things i'm over, too. here's what i'm loving (this week), let me know what you think.

the song
i know it's wrong, but i can't help it. selena gomez (and the un-seen scene) keep releasing catchy singles, which the radio stations keep playing. it's mindless. it's spring-y. who says i can't like "who says?"

the movie
the reason i have such a huge dvd collection - number in the hundreds? - is so i never get bored. i tend to fall in love with movies when i see them; and then i feel the urge to buy them. divine sisters of the yaya sisterhood was an impulse purchase sometime in my early teens and i just rediscovered it. probably where my crush on sandra bullock started.

tv show
so there was a marathon of season 25: oprah behind the scenes on this weekend. so i watched all 10 hours. and i'm not ashamed. as someone who can't wait to brake into the tv industry, this show is like crack for me. an addiction i never want to treat - sadly, i'll have to when the end of the oprah winfrey show brings the end of season 25: oprah behind the scenes with it.

the look

she's still mixing both good girl and bad girl. i think i like good girl (vogue) better.

and this happened. spears surprised a crowd at the palms las vegas, giving a taste of what's to come from her femme fatale promotion. and, guess what? she can still dance.

day 3.101

pilot season, take 2
here's my take on the two networks i didn't hit last week - fox and the cw.

fox
the formerly fourth place net continues to climb up the ratings charts with hits like american idol, glee and (the now defunct) 24. because fox only broadcasts for two hours a night, they have considerably less space for new series - therefore, they order less (natch). so far this season the pilot gaining the most buzz is the half-hour laugher, i hate my teenage daughter. fox nabbed one of the season's most in-demand actors, my name is earl's jame pressly, to headline the series. the plot? two moms (pressly and tony award winner katie finneran) realize they're daughters are just like the girls who tormented them in high school. while i like the plot, i don't think fox has found its footing as far as sitcoms. malcolm in the middle is fox's ones success story, and i think they've tried to recreate that success with this season's raising hope. the only thing is both of those series share a very specific tone, which doesn't appeal to everyone. i think fox needs to embrace the traditional sitcom - laugh track, live audience and multicam, if they want to make something like this work. too bad they never will.

fox has been far more successful with their dramedies. a new pilot from liz meriwether (who wrote this fall's box office hit no strings attached) follows the life of elementary school teacher jessica as she moves out of her now ex-boyfriend's apartment and into a glorified bachelor pad, where three less-than-stellar dudes also live. the fact that fox landed zooey deschanel for this pilot means its bound to be good. deschanel dabbled in tv work, recurring on showtime's weeds, but has never starred. she joins her sister, emily, on the net (she currently headlines bones). it will be important for fox to pair this as-yet-untitled vehicle with a strong series (like glee) if they want it to hit. deschanel's not quite a household name, and doesn't pack enough star power to bring in a huge audience.

the cw
with even less original-programming time than fox, the cw seems to be looking at even less possible pilots. from the looks of it, the teen-centric net has only one viable pilot option - heart of dixie. from the team behind gossip girl and chuck, which just so happens to be the same creative force behind fox's former teen soap the o.c., heart of dixie will track the trials and tribulation of zoe hart, a big time manhattan doctor who inherits a practice in a small, southern town. former o.c. star rachel bilson is set to headline the series, which adds some credibility to the cw. bilson has been a hot property in tv since the o.c. left the airwaves, so its a big get - especially since bilson was attached to star in a pilot for nbc that fell through.

March 18, 2011

day 3.98

pilot season
it's the most wonderful time of the year. well, at least i think it is. spring is the time of year when all the major networks start working on new fall shows. here's a breakdown of the major projects each of the networks are planning.

abc
for the past ... well, decade, basically, abc has had the strongest pilots, and therefore the best shot at a successful season. that pattern continues again this year. abc execs are working the show i'm most looking forward to, good christian bitches. based on the book of the same name, the series follows amanda, a recently divorced mother of two who returns to the dallas suburb where she grew up, hoping to start fresh. too bad all the girls she scorned in high school are out to get her. the pilot stars leslie bibb (from the wb's popular and the iron man movies) as amanda, while kristin chenoweth (cheno!) plays the ring leader of amanda's hate club. produced by the man responsible for the original 90210 and sex and the city, gcb (as it's being called) looks to have the most potential.
georgetown is abc's other promising series this season. centered on the young power players running washington, d.c., the show will star jimmy wolk (from this season's biggest upset, lone star) and katie cassidy (melrose place, gossip girl). georgetown comes from the team behind gossip girl and nbc's chuck, so georgetown has the potential to be as youthful and hip as the characters living in it.

abc's also rebooting charlie's angels. with part of the original creative team behind it, as well as drew barrymore's production company flower films (which produced the two feature films), there's a good chance we'll actually get to see these angels take flight. angels landed one of this season's most sought after actresses, minka kelly, so hopefully her burgeoning star power can bring some added buzz to the show. the another ladies aren't too bad either - here's one of the many pics of the cast on set in miami that his the internets this week.

nbc
after a merger with comcast and a nearly complete overhaul of its management team, nbc looks to be trying as hard as it can to pull itself from fourth place. most of nbc's shows are high concept and/or remake. the biggest risk at the peacock net? the wonder woman reboot. starring friday night light's adrianne palicki (who was also part of fox's failed lone star), the one thing wonder woman has going for it is the brain power of david e. kelley. kelley created the practice, ally mcbeal, boston legal, boston public and, most recently, harry's law. if anyone knows how to bring strong female characters to the small screen, it's kelley. plus, elizabeth hurley is set to co-star. but after i saw this picture of palicki in full wonder woman garb ... i'm more than worried.
nbc also has two period pieces in production. the first is called playboy, which - you guessed it - focuses on the playboy brand. the show will follow the start of hugh hefner's empire, centered on the playboy club in chicago. former csi: miami star (and liam rimes homewrecking partner in crime) eddie cibrian is set to star. the second, pan am, will follow the scandalous and scintillating era that launched the jet age. think mad men in the sky. the project will be christina ricci's first series gig if it gets picked up.
nbc got some star-driven comedies set to launch, too. are you there vodka? it's me chelsea is a small screen adaptation of chelsea handler's book. laura prepon (that 70's show) will take on the role of chelsea while hander will play, of all things, her own sister. it will be interesting to see how nbc plays this off, as the tv show's version of chelsea will be a waitress/bartender instead of a famous comedian. joining handler on the small screen will be christina applegate, who's returning to tv for the first time since becoming a mom. that real life experience will be some help in applegate's new role, in which she'll play a modern working mommy trying to please her stay at home husband and hovering parents. if nbc is able to get all these shows on the air, there's a good chance they could finally rebound. the peacock's been feeling the pinch since friends went off the air in 2004.

cbs
it looks like cbs hopes to maintain their number one spot, continuing to order their staple of comedies, dramedies and crime procedurals. the show i'm most excited for is the assistants. wizards of waverly place star david henrie landed the lead role of mike, one of four assistants to a celebrity power couple. the biggest draw here? heather locklear signed on to play the wife-half of the power couple. as for comedies, cbs landed two big names - michelle trachtenberg and mary lynn rajskub. trachtenberg will star in an as-yet-untitled workplace comedy, whil rajskub joins the cast of how to be a gentleman, about an uptight guy working to loosen up. entourage's kevin dillon is also attached to star.
cbs is also readying rookies, a cop drama following first year officers. while it sounds super similar to abc's summer flop rookie blue, the one thing cbs's rookies has going for it is its star - leelee sobieski. after virtually disappearing from the biz, i'm glad to see sobieski making a comeback. robert de niro is producing the show, so chances are good it'll get picked up.

those are the big three for now - i'll have my thoughts on fox and the cw's prospects later in the week.

ok, it's not actually friday. but i do have a mild obsession with rebecca black's "friday." i don't know what it is, but i can't get enough. and my new favorite thing to do? find covers of "friday" on youtube ... that actually make the song sound like it has some music cred. here are some of my faves.

the best music video ... ever?
from the infectious repetition, to the auto-tuned talk-singing, to the rando 30-something rapper, rebecca black's "friday" is the latest so-bad-it's-good music video to go viral. apparently all you need to have a music career today is a slight resemblance to victoria justice or selena gomez, and a $100 production budget. previously unknown, black's name is all over the internets thanks to "friday," which features lyrics like "kickin' in the front seat, sittin' in the back seat - gotta make my mind up, which seat can i take?" and "yesterday was thursday (thursday). today it is friday (friday). we we we so excited ... tomorrow is saturday, and sunday comes afterwards." i can't wait to see what's next for black. you know she'll ride this out for as long as possible. maybe she can make a song for every day of the week? it would be like someone reading their day planner aloud to you!

March 12, 2011

day 3.92

jennifer lawrence - the hunger games' katniss?
she's blonde. she's beautiful. and she's going to play katniss? after much speculation, reports are circling that the creative team behind next year's the hunger games film adaptation have finally found their leading lady in oscar nominee jennifer lawrence. while lawrence's fellow oscar nominee hailee steinfeld's name was the one thrown around the most this award season in reference to the role of katniss, i'm not going to complain with this casting choice. while lawrence will most likely have to go brunette for the role, we know she can pull off the living-off-the-land wilderness girl thing (see: winter's bone). i also like going with someone a little older to play the role of 16-year-old katniss; it would be a little jarring to see 14-year-old steinfeld dealing with the death and destruction seen in the series. lawrence's casting is the first step in making this movie finally come together. hopefully she'll sign her name on the dotted line in the next couple of days so that the rest of the cast can be determined.

March 11, 2011

day 3.91

britney's back
britney's new album, femme fatale, leaked its way online - and here's your first chance to listen to the 10 songs waiting release on itunes. the sound of brit's 7th studio album is very electro-pop, very dancy. while none of the songs live up to spears' best electro-dance song ("toxic"), the sound of femme fatale is a nice departure from 2008's circus. the stand out tracks for me? "gasoline" and "how i roll."

March 10, 2011

day 3.90

movie review: beastly
beastly is the perfect title for this mess of a movie. after being pushed back from last summer, the vanessa hudgens vehicle finally made it to theaters. too bad they didn't take that extra time in the edit bay - or with reshoots. beastly is a modern retelling of beauty and the beast, so you'd think the creative team would attempt to add some twists and turns to make beastly a little less predictable. guess what? they don't. while i think the actors do the best with what they were given - especially neil patrick harris and lisa gay hamilton - the movie is an hour and a half of one uncomfortable moment after another. though it was nice to see mary kate olsen on the big screen ... i've missed her since new york minute. the movie won't hurt anyone's career - alex pettyfer and vanessa hudgens both have multiple projects in the works - but i don't know if this was a film screaming to be made. from the wikipedia description of the book beastly was based on, the book sounds a lot more interesting. maybe skip the theater and head straight to barnes and noble?

obsessed
my favorite song. one of my (new) favorite people. i wouldn't complain if gwyneth came on glee full time. the oscar winning multi-talent is reportedly this close to signing a record deal with atlantic. that's another thing i wouldn't complain about.

March 8, 2011

day 3.88

they're back...finally
the ladies of the real housewives of new york are officially set to make their tv return april 7th - more than a month later than bravo originally announced. after being pushed aside for the premiere of the less-than-stellar real housewives of miami, bravo desperately needs the women of new york to remind viewers that the housewives franchise can actually be entertaining. yes, the real housewives of the oc are back, but that show needs a massive overhaul. the real housewives of beverly hills raised the bar for the franchise, and the women of orange county are looking more than a little out of date. while i'd miss vicki's "whoo-hoo's" and tamra's scheming a little, a whole new orange county cast - one that actually involves housewives and real drama - would be a big help. the return of rhony means three housewives series will be on at the same time (ny, oc and mia), plus a housewives spinoff - bethenny ever after. i hate to say it, but there might be too many housewives on tv.

miley does snl...and it's pretty cool
last night, miley cyrus took the 30 rock stage last night and surprised everyone - it was one of the, if not the, best episode of the season. not only did miley embrace every self-depricating skit, she was also fine with bashing her celebrity peers. check out the best moments below.

jerry o'connell should totally replace charlie sheen on two and a half men. winning?

March 4, 2011

day 3.84

lady maria takes the stage
remember the 10-year-old canadian cutie who went viral with her cover of lady gaga's "born this way?" well, she's gone more than viral - she's gone full fledged pop star. maria aragon joined gaga onstage last night at gaga's monster ball tour stop in toronto. gaga and maria played the piano and sang "born this way" together on stage. while gaga over-shadowed the pint-sized pop prodigy a little, maria was able to hold her own on stage. check out the clip above (look out for gaga trying to hold back her tears). if the mother/daughter relationship that came across on stage is any indication, i'd say big things are ahead for maria. i'm guessing she'll be signing with the haus of gaga any day now.

britney $pears?
should brit brit add a dollar sign to her name? by the sound of the second song off spear's new album, femme fatale, she definitely should. none other than the queen of dirty pop - ke$ha - penned "till the world ends." surprising, right? while i like hearing britney's vocals on a very ke-dollarsign-ha song, i think it would've been cooler to hear the princess and punk of pop hit the recording studio together. check out "till the world ends" above - it's available on itunes now if you can't get enough.

lindsay lohan: back and better than ever?

it's been a long time coming, but i think it may finally have arrived. lindsay lohan sat down with extra's jerry penacoli for her first (and only) post-rehab interview. from this short clip (above) it actually looks like lindsay finally gets what's going on - she's not just saying she's ready to return to work, she actually appears ready. plus, with all the charlie sheen craziness going on, anyone looks sober and sane. lindsay also appeared on jimmy kimmel's post oscars special - she's great at making fun of herself and needs to make a return to the saturday night live stage.
